Newbie: advice on an Ipod 7th Gen vs 5.5Gen?

Hi Everyone,

First, I know this is a topic that has come up a few times before on this board (and I read every thread on this topic that I could find) but I am still torn between which iPod to get.

I am a beginner when it comes to high-quality audio and I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I recently started buying CDs again (was buying iTunes files for a while) so my library is a mix of AAC files and ALAC currently. The reason I'm sticking with apple for the moment is for convenience, I probably will rip my CDs into FLAC one day , but that probably won't be for another few months.

From what I understand, the 7th gen iPod and 5.5gen have different DACs, and I've heard various opinions as to which one is better. I've sort of distilled what I've learned down to this:

1. 7th Gen is worth it if you plan to use it as-is with no modding.

2. 5.5 Gen is worth it if you plan to use mods like iMod or Rockbox.

Is that correct for the most part?

I personally would not be getting iMod if I got a 5.5Gen because it's out of my price range at the moment, but I would consider Rockbox if it meant audio improvement. That leads to my other question, which is does Rockbox give an audio improvement by default, or does it just give access to different EQs which you can then modify things on your own? Because I generally don't mess with EQs all that much.

Sorry for the long winded post, I'd just like some general advice or opinions as to which iPod is recommended and would give me the best sound.

Thank you!

5.5 is worth it as-is with no modding too. I've heard good things about 7, though it's not considered an improvement on 5.5. I've been told that 7 is hard to rockbox. Honestly, though, I suspect we're talking about the difference between vanilla and vanilla. But maybe someone else knows better. (Most likely, however, they're simply more opinionated.)

I listen to CDs at home and use 5.5 on the go because I like the look and GUI. I'm really less impressed with the others, including AK. Sure, I wish Apple allowed more formats. Maybe rockbox takes care of that, but I don't want to endanger iPod's native capabilities and I'm lazy about this. The whole point of iPod is its simplicity, functionality, convenience, durability, good looks--and it does all that. The other companies need to learn from the master. The best hope is for Google or Samsung to produce a killer DAP.

Thank you for the reply, that is exactly what I am going for. Although iTunes can be annoying at times when it comes to syncing, it's really convenient at the moment to just use my macbook to rip CDs into ALAC and then sync them. I do plan to archive my CDs on my PC via FLAC using EAC at some point like I said, but for now I would enjoy simplicity.

It's also nice because I can get a 120gb 5.5 for cheaper than an 80gb 7th as well!

I have heard that Rockbox isn't compatible with the 7th gen iPods as well, so I suppose it's good to at least have the option even though at the moment I don't really know what it does =P
