Well priced amp for HE-500?

Hello all,

I recently took my first plunge into higher end headphones to the HE-500 (From the DT-880).

After spending only a few days with these headphones, I have entered into a whole now realization of my music. Now that I have realized that it actually CAN get better, i'm starting to think that my Asus Xonar STX isn't quite up to the task of these headphones.

I am looking for an amp that is detailed and does the mids the justice these cans deserve. My budget is >$500

Any and all help or advice is appreciated greatly!

Check out Audio-gd and ask them what will pair best and fall within your budget.  I have and very much like the SA-31SE, which properly powers the HE-6, but it is a bit over your budget, especially shipped.

The Schiit Asgard 2 does a good job for half your budget.

If I were to buy an amp in that price range, I'd consider Lyr, Project Ember and the A-GD offerings and the emotiva too, just to mention some.

Thanks! I've heard many of these talked about before, but have also heard many conflicting reports about them used with HE-500. Anyone have a preference or experience with these amps?

I have experience with the emo, and I'd definitely buy it if I planned to use it for speakers as well. Only for the HE-500? Would be on the fence about that one, mostly due to the inconvenience with adapters, the risk of noise, lack of headroom etc. But it sounds good.
