Need your thoughts on the HE-400, what amp I should get, and if I need a DAC. Other headphone recommendations? Thanks!

Hey guys! This is my first post, thanks in advance.

I want to keep my budget at $500, but if you think there's something worth spending a little more on, I'm all ears. For the past couple years I've been using Bose QC15(unexpected but awesome xmas gift) with a Xonar DX 7.1 soundcard, and have been nothing but happy with it. It is light years better than just using speakers or generic headphones plugged into the motherboard, and is what showed me everything I've been missing out on. However, I find myself yearning for an even better experience now, be it watching movies, listening to music, or playing games.

So I'll start off with what I'm going to mostly be listening to:

  • Movies (bluray)
  • Games
  • Music
    • Ambient Techno(Tycho)
    • Trip Hop/Jazz/Beats(Nujabes, Blazo, TwoDaysToAlaska)
    • Instrumental(in my case Final Fantasy soundtracks ;p)
    • Rock/Alternative

Looking at this thread I think I've decided on the HiFiMan HE-400, given the above are there other options I should consider?

Since I already have a soundcard, I'm wondering if getting a separate DAC would carry any benefits? As in, either hooking the DAC up to the soundcard(redundant?)or running it entirely separate? Or is the Xonar DX good enough?

The Magni + Modi combo seems to be popular as well as the best bang for your buck. And if I don't need a DAC, I'm still looking at the Magni. However, I have almost no experience other than everything I've been reading, so if you guys have any better suggestions, shoot'em at me.

Thanks!

I don't know anything about computer audio so I can't comment on the Modi situation, but I think that the Magni should be able to power the HE-400's just fine.

I just remembered the HE-400i is coming out soon and got myself super excited.

Then I made myself sad when I remembered I don't have enough money for them...

The Modi/Magni combination should sound very good. You could start with just the Magni and see if you are satisfied. Or if you have speakers to use with your computer, too, I would recommend the Schiit Asgard 2. A step up from the Magni with pre-outs for hooking up speakers.

As for the Modi, if you buy a DAC with optical inputs, you can still use the Dolby Headphone capability and other DSP features on your sound card. Audio-GD makes some combined DAC/headphone amps that are really good with optical inputs and in your budget range. They also have pre-outs for hooking up speakers. Search for Audio-GD and head-fi, and you'll find plenty of discussion of their products.

Thanks cel, I'll look into Audio-GD, that might be just what I'm looking for. Also, thanks ThickGlasses, I looked into the 400i after you mentioned it,  I think I might hold out a little bit longer and see how it compares.

If anyone else has any suggestions, be it headphones, amps, or dacs, I'm still listening :)

No reason not to wait for the HE-400i unless you're really constrained on budget and have to buy the HE-400 for 300usd.
