HD555 owner. What's next?

First of all, let me say thanks to this forum for getting me into headphones about 6 years ago when I bought the Sennheiser HD555s.

Huge thanks also to pandaman for his stellar review on the Andes E07k.

I am a fan of the laid back, warm Senn sound and find the soundstage marvelous on the HD555s.

The HD555s are getting long in the tooth now although they are really sparkling after the foam mod. I also notice bass is more present after the mod.

Recently I bought my first Amp/DAC, the E07k.  The HD555s are sounding even sweeter now! More open and musical. So many more details like needle drops and musicians breathing.Incredible!

Sooo...Where to next?

Budget is $200-250

Main listening is done from laptop with E07k as DAC or from Android phone.

Prefer to stick with Sennheiser. I don't like harsh, fatiguing treble.  Comfort is huge.

I read the excellent reviews here for HD25s and Momentums. (Also, I loved my pair of PX-100s but sadly the cord broke. Miss those as a goto portable can.  )

I can't decide if I want the next can to be an open or closed. I definitely don't like IEMs. Closed would probably anger the wife so I wonder if the HD25s are out. :D

The HD598s look like more of the same, especially with styling, so they are not entirely appealing.

Maybe what I could do is use the HD555s at home then the new phones would be a portable for work.

Thanks again for all your input and insight.

for open headphones, i suggest you save a bit more since 250 isn't going to be a spectacular upgrade. You could try the philips x1 for a different flavor/sound signature, but it's not much of an upgrade coming from hd555+mod which is already mid-fi.

as for closed headphones,

The hd25 will clamp your ears like hell. Though it really depends on the person, just keep that in mind. I also suggest you raise your budget to at least 300 for some really good full size portables like the NAD hp50, momentum over ear, or the vmoda m100 (bass heavy)

In your case, I'm not entirely sure the HD 598 would be that big of an improvement- I'd recommend the HD 600's. They don't require ridiculously priced amping and if you save up a bit, you can find a good deal or a used one for only $300! Absolute bargain.

x2 on hd600. Or even the hd650, though that's even more expensive

+1 and I've seen them for $275 too. It's a sensible given your liking for HD555 and your wise interest in upgrading to another open model.

Thanks. Will the E07k drive the HD600s adequately?
