How to Improve My Marantz CD5003 CD Player

Hello,

I've been bitten by the "I need to upgrade" bug again.

I've been researching HP here and ordered the AKG 601's but now I'm wondering about the source. (CD5003)

I'm using a Little Dot III tube amp which hasn't warmed up the sound as much as I'd like with my AKG K240's right now.

So I'm wondering if I should look to an affordable DAC or maybe a warmer interconnect?

I say "affordable" because I can only spend under $200.00 right now.

Ideally I would love to tame the highs and bring out the bass.

BTW~I also have an old Pioneer PDR-509 CD player/recorder which I can't decide if it sounds better.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds as if you might want a tube amp, so Little Dot mk3 or maybe Vali. I haven't heard either. What about EQ?

Thanks for the reply!

I'm already using the LD MK3 and even rolled in some warmer tubes.

So now it's about an outboard DAC or an EQ which you mentioned.

I love the EQ suggestion...but I can't find any suggestions here.

The Marantz CD5003 does not appear to have a digital output, so you can't hook up a DAC to it.

I'm guessing you can try the AKG K601s plugged directly into the CD5003 and the MKIII and see which sounds better.

The K601 should sound better then the K240s.

The Marantz DOES have two digital outputs..one Coaxial and the other Toslink.

However, I'm now thinking of adding an Equalizer to tame the harsh frequencies.

I would love any suggestions.

Oops, there are S/PDIF optical and coaxial output jack on the CD5003, can't believe I did not see them.

S/PDIF optica/coaxial input DACs are not cheap, there are a few sold on eBay for $110, and I've bought a few, they are not as reliable as I would like.

There is the Mavrick Audio D2 DAC, $249 or Schiit Bifrost DAC, $349

So, you have the 5003, PA?

I'm asking because I'm wondering how much improvement there would be with an outboard DAC.

With my research people have been saying the DAC in the 5003 is pretty good so there won't be much of an improvement with another DAC.

Any thoughts?

All this interests me as I'm currently deciding between CD5004 and CD6005. I'm planning to run the headphone jack out to an O2 amp maybe using a custom 6.5 to 3.5 interconnect (unless some other configuration such as the RCA taps, makes more sense?).

I've been looking at the Behringer parametric EQs, but I've read some posts that raised concerns about signal contamination.

I do no own the CD5003, I just looked up on the internet a picture of the back of it, I guess the internet is pretty cool.

It would not occur to me to buy an external DAC for a Marantz, unless I had a lot of extra cash laying around, like $400 for an external DAC/amp.

As others have said, Marantz seems to build some good sounding stuff.

If I own the CD5003, I would just plug headphone straight into it's headphone jack

I would think to cancel the AKG K601 and skip buying a DAC and put all the audio budget into headphones.

Sell off the MKIII would up your headphone budget.

A headphone jack should be your last option for sound quality.

For an external headphone amplifier, you want to use the analog output jacks (RCAs) on the back of the CD player, to connect to the line-input on the O2.

Should provide a cleaner signal, compared to the headphone output jack.

Thank you both. I'll pick up an RCA-3.5 interconnect.

@Koukol if you sell off the LD Mk3, you lose whatever warmth it was providing. K601 is warmer than K70x (and K501), so it's a good choice. The DAC on the Marantz should be fine; by reputation it's a warmer, more analog sound than most. Try CD5003 -> LD Mk3 -> K601. If it doesn't satisfy, the alternative is trying warmer (but not necessarily not more expensive) headphones as PA suggests.

I have the 5003, great cd player. Are all the outputs live in the back? Currently I am using the analog and would like to switch to digital.. Thanks in advance

I think you misread the post. I want to use the optical or digital output in the back. Do I have to do anything in the menu?  Currently using analog l/r.. Why do I have to take unit apart?
