Actually, what I thought I take to the NYC meet, is my sets of VT-231s and a tungsol. Maybe other 6sn7s...

I am using right now two RCAs and a Kenrad, they sound really good on the MPX3. The Sylvanias VT-231s are a very refined sounding set, but I find the RCA/Kenrad very fun to listen to.

So maybe we can do some rolling at NYC.... The catch, not enough time to fully appreciate the tubes, but could give the gist of the sound... if you catch my drift...


Are there going to be ppx, mpx maestro at NYC>???

could be a lot of fun...

I think Mikhail is bringing most of the line-up if I remember correctly. My Maestro will be there.

Hirsch - rad! Not often do I find something 'postworthy' on head-fi these days ... but this rules. I have a static system (i'm not changing anything for a very long while) and would love to test out the pack. sign me up!

I'm still hard at work, picking out interesting trio's of tubes. Let's see, we've got some RCA cleartop 6FQ7's, some Japanese short plate tubes, some black plates, some Sylvania's, some GE's ... The trick is going to be to hold down the number of tubes in the pack. I'll post a list of the pack once it's completed.

OK, four sets are locked in:

RCA cleartops (6FQ7/6CG7)
RCA blackplates (6CG7)
Tung Sol (6CG7)
Selectron (Japanese 6FQ7)

I'm going to try and pick out two more and call it a pack. Probably a set of Sylvania 6CG7's. The final set might be RCA or GE 6CG7's, I think.

I'm going to try and route the pack so that it has to travel the shortest distance between each person wanting in. I'd also like to know who has my tubes. So, please send me an e-mail at moehoward9000@mindspring.com with your Head-Fi user name, real name, address, and phone. I use heavy spam blocking, so please put "TUBE PACK" in the subject line. You may get something from Mindspring telling you that you need to ask to get into my address book or something, but as long as the subject line is clear, I'll get your e-mail. Once I've got everyone's addresses, I'll plot the route and post the order in which people will get the tubes. If interest is small, they will all go together. If enough people want to try the tubes, I'll break it into two packs that will travel different routes. As always, suggestions for making this happen smoothly are welcome.

NOTE: If I don't get an e-mail from you, you won't be on the list!

Awesome. But it makes more sense to give a time-frame for which each person can keep the tubes. Include safe operating instructions and select the sequence the tubes follow in going from hand to hand so that everyone's needs are met.

For example - tubes will be MOST welcome in my hands when I go for the HeadFi meet on the 25th of June. So I would like to get them on or before the 22nd of June and I will ship them out within a week after the meet.

I think 10 days per person will be ideal...

What do you guys think??

All tubes are being tested, both by tester and in my amp, before making it into the pack. I'd be happy to accomodate people by scheduling them for specific times (or not scheduling them when they're on vacation) IF that information is in the confirmation e-mail I receive. For this to work, people are going to have to move the tubes very promptly.

The Sylvania's are definitely in. A GE set might round this out. Or an RCA cleartop 6CG7 set to compare to the 6FQ7's. Or an RCA 6CG7 top-getter set to compare to the cleartops...choices...choices...

I don't have enough spare Mazda Brimar's and Selectron 6CG7's to send sets. I only have one spare Mazda Brimar and two spare Selectron 6CG7's (a different tube than the 6FQ7, which is similar to the Raytheon's from Japan). If those work well together, I might send those with the Mazda Brimar as the driver, in which case the pack may be larger than six sets of tubes

I like the idea of including single tubes if they are available. Some of the best trios for particular cans I have found to be of a mixed variety. Right now I'm using an RCA cleartop as the driver and Sylvania's on the outputs which seemed to work famously with the RS-1's and still works quite nice with the HD600's now that the RS-1's are back with their owner.

So if a full set is not available I think singles are just as good to give an idea of how they work in combination. I'm particularly interested in the Mazda Brimar.

I've gotten two e-mail confirmations so far. Please confirm via e-mail (see above) to make sure you're on the list if you want a box of tubes to sample to show up at your door. Please make sure I have complete contact information. I need this to help keep track of the tubes, on their (very short so far) travels.

I would recommend you let them try the GE tubes. I am getting excellent sound with a cryo rca clear top driver and two GE output tubes. The GE's might be my second favorite tube. I am so pleased all the 6cg7's are such good tubes.

That sounds like a good recommendation. I'll test a few more sets, and finalize the pack.
