A beta has been released of the new firmware based on the X5 for the X3 and can be found in the X3 thread.

Razorblader has provided a version with the volume fixed

It is working really well with major SQ enhancements especially to mp3s.

The only bug I have found so far is that I can't seem to fix a volume for restart. It always comes back at the last volume setting, so I must remember to reduce it when using my IEMs!

The addition of DSD is great. Are there plans to support DST in future releases?

Edit: see X3 thread for fix to restart volume - thanks skalkman

please don't upgrade to beta version cause it is not so stable. anyway, you guys can see we are working hard to provide a total different UI with some new features into X3.

James, thanks for warning. But upgraded be up to the beta version and I'm excited sound. Bigger space, better separation instruments. Bass and trebles are much better controlled. You are a wizards. Thumbs up. :)

James Fiio,

I know that you and your staff read these forums periodically, which I very much appreciate.  It seems to me that you are on the right track with this device.  I have put a few suggestions into bugzilla, but admit I do not fully understand the voting up and down process.

My key suggestions would be as follows:

1)  Add some kind of mode that makes the screen brightness adjustable so it can be seen in daylight.

2)  Add some kind of usb power draw mode similar to the E07 that allow the unit to connect via DAC in a way that the iphones etc. do not see the unit as trying to charge from the IOS device.  We have reports that the X3 can connect to iphones with the use of USB hubs.  This supports the idea that once the power negotiation issue is resolved between the X3 and IOS device, the X3 can function as a DAC for the IOS device.

I would rather carry one device as a DAC on the road instead of both an E07 and the X3.

Thank you for creating great products and supporting them.

@originalsnuffy: Do you mean auto-brightness like on smartphones?

I doubt it would be an autobrightness function like cell phones as the unit most likley would not have the required sensors.   So perhaps a mode that if set would move display brightness to a higher level for a set period of time.

I just find the display hard to read in my car during daylight, let alone in direct sun.

Like a Quick Menu option to boost screen to maximum brightness OR an override that boosts brightness beyond the current maximum brightness?

Well, I am already running the X3 under beta firmware 2.14 at maximum brightness.  I am open to how this is implemented, but I sure would like some way to see this in daylight.

I am using theme 2.

I did notice that when the unit first turns on it can be fairly bright, so I presume there is some room to eke out more brightness, at least for short periods of time.

Please keep in mind that some types of screen just doesn't work well under sun light, doesn't matter how bright the screen is.

I don't know what type of screen the X3 has, maybe James or Joe can help us to clarify.

Just saying that it might be a problem without solution since is a shortcoming of the screen.

Point noted.  But when my X3 starts up, it is pretty bright for a second or two.

The device does not change brightness, the thing you see as a dip in brightness is just the simple fact that you are using a dark/black theme (if you are still using theme 2). Low contrast themes (i.e. dark ones) will get darker in direct sunlight, as a matter of fact this is apparent in every form of backlit display whether the UI is using a low contrast theme or not. I would encourage you to switch to one of the other themes or make a high contrast theme (by inverting the black theme using the firmware tools and a bit of editing).

Actually when it starts up it is in orange; first a very bright orange then a subdued orange.  I tried some other themes, and they are a bit better.

There is no way I am going to be editing the firmware.  Not in my wheelhouse.  Don't know the Zipcode.  Not invited to that party.
