Laptop USB portable sound card for HD600

Thread Starter

I am willing to update my laptop sound output. Before I have used in my old laptop Sound Blaster Audigy ZS 2. My newer laptop is not compatible with it any more. Audigy give much better sound than the laptop sound, but the output connectors were very bad. I have a cable from HD650 with 6.35 mm to 3.5 mm adapter. I broke one Audigy ZS 2 output. I replaced it by a new card and again the output got broken and I have to soldier input again after few months of using it.

I am mainly listening to the music while I am in the office. I need some kind of portable device to connect HD600. I would like to have too some digital output to connect to 5.1 equipment if it is possible. I found up to now following solutions:

- Creative Sound Blaster Omni 5.1

  SNR only 100 dB

good headphones output up to 600 ohms

  remote control

  optional 5.1 output

headphones with surround Dolby 5.1 for movies

  problems with 44 kHz sampling

- Creative Xi-Fi HD

  SNR 114 dB

  good headphone output

  6.35 mm jack

  lack of 5.1 output

  problems with 44 kHz sampling

- Asus Xonar U7

  SNR 114 dB

  7.1 output

  support all sampling rates

probably headphone signal too week for HD600

some people says that 7.1 output signal is week too

- Fiio E10

some people claims is great, some other claims that with HD600 it sound badly

- Fiio E6/E9

good combination for stereo sound, but not so portable

Of course at home I could use for example one of the upper DAC + Fiio E9 or E10.

For Fiio/Creative Xi-Fi HD devices, if I connect them to amplituner or TV by SPDIF I would get 5.1/7.1 signal or it will be only stereo one?

The best option would be to buy all devices, test them and stay with the best one or two if there are such. But I am not so please with buying and returning devices.
