That's cool and again thanks for your effort and sharing the info with us. The 240GB and 480GB mSATA drives are much more affordable than other options (CF cards, etc) for the same storage size, and for me personally I love rockbox so your RB patch for the mSATA is exactly what I am looking for. FYI, I am currently using a 256GB CF card for my diymod also rockboxed. It works great.

By the way, are you one of the Rockbox developers? Torne tried to resolve the rockbox issue previously and I just read your feedback in this post.

I am not on the rockbox development team but I did read through the rockbox forum thread during my patch development. Torne's patch solved the boot error -11 issue and is part of the patch I applied, Definitely we need to thank Torne for his work.

+1, he put in lots of effort and time to resolve the issue. Kudos to both of you.

BTW, someone wants to try this 1 TB mSATA? If you do, please share with us your results. :)

Thank you beyondwind, I just installed back the 256gb mSATA card in my iPod and loaded rockbox and the patch.

Will listen to some good ol' AC/DC now to test the iPod.

And yes Dminor, it would be sweet to try that 1tb card XD.

So installation of the rockbox and patch went flawlessly?

Please update us on the heat issue and battery performance based on your initial observations.

Yes, I just used the auto install method and then extracted the contents of the path in the root of the storage of the iPod and ejected the iPod.

I have only heard two songs and no songs skipping so far, One thing I like with the mSATA card is the transfer speeds (8.5mbps) when loading the iPod with music.

That's cool. That transfer speed is about the same as my 256GB CF (13 mb/s from disk mode and 8 to 9 mb/s from RB).

BTW, for the patch I am assuming all you need to do is to install normally (auto install) and then overwrite the entire folder "rockbox" with the one provided by beyondwind. Correct?

That's great. Could you give me the 256gb msata SSD model number so I can update a list of supported SSD? Thanks

What program can I use for the disk speed test?

I used the Crucial m4 256GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT256M4SSD3.

Thanks again for posting this solution.

Looking forward to that mSATA to zif adapter you are considering to manufacture.

Plugin ->application -> test_disk

Please have your iPOD fully charged and plug in the charge cord during the disk speed test.  After the test you will see a disk test log file in txt format in the root folder.

Thanks.

Can you please provide the patches / diff files that allow for this mod.  After all, this is opensource code.

Thank you

beyondwind,

Your finding seems to indicate that 240GB mSATA SSD with adapter draws more peak current than 240GB HDD. That is interesting. Maybe poor adapter design contributes to power waste. Please let us know when you have a better adapter board.

Do you think 1TB mSATA SSD need more peak current than iPod (and adapter) can deliver? And can 5.5 Gen's small RAM handle 1TB of LAME v0 VBR mp3?

I heard one may reduce SSD's power draw (while retaining NAND memory) by removing some controllers/components (e.g., those that are overkill for/not utilized by iPod). Please kindly comment. Thank you!

Thank you

I  already made it available on the rockbox forum. Didn't realize that people here would be interested in source code. The patch is in the same folder as the firmware download dir: beyondwind.duckdns.org/downloads/
