Sadly my Ultimate Ears UE900’s have fallen apart, and I am doing some research to find a replacement mobile rig.
I am an audiophile, but I prefer some sensation in my headphones. Perfectly flat sound is boring to me, however I am also not looking for booming, distorted, sound like in Beats or something. I actually really like the Ultimate Ears sound signature. It is a fun v-shape, but still relatively neutral and as a result no frequencies are drowned out; it is fun but still accurate.
I don’t know what to buy though. I constantly ruin my IEM’s and don’t want to buy something else in a year. Furthermore common sense dictates that large over-the-ear headphones can produce better sound then IEM’s. I do love the fast paces, precise, sound of IEM’s though. Anyways the closed headphone market has evolved in the last couple of years or so, and I am curious what is has to offer.
I used to take my IEM’s everywhere:
- To university / the office
- While biking in the sun / rain / hail / snow (I live in the Netherlands and my morning commute looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkgKYjrNLwg)
- When attacking the mountains
- At the gym
- In the car / train / plane
Portability and isolation are obviously important to me. I wouldn’t mind carrying around a stylish headphone like the new Focals or a B&W P7 if the sound would be better than that of an IEM. However wearing an ugly Sennheiser or something in public would be a no-go.
My budget is rather flexible, however I would prefer to spend between €300 and €500.
What would you guys buy?
