Just saying "hello"

I have a pair of post-2006 HD650s and a HeadRoom Dekstop Amp and Micro DAC.  I need another set of cans, so I joined to track down a pair LCD2s and read up on the industry.

Welcome. That's a pretty good set up. What do you listen to (mostly)?

I listen to trance and psy, gothenburg and progressive metal, piano, violin, and flamenco instrumentals, and mambo.  I also watch a lot of 5.1 encoded media that is downmixed to 2.0.  I typically audition audio equipment with Sarah McLachlan, Air, KMFDM, and Yuki Kajiura.  Now that my group of friends and I have kids, we are spending more and more of our evening time with ears on instead of firing up our home theaters.

Why are you thinking of the Audeze?

I am a big fan of my 650s and what I have read makes the LCD-2 seem like a natural next step.  I am a little concerned about comfort, however.  I wear headphones at least a couple hours a day and the 650s have been incredibly comfortable.  The weight of the LCD-2s seems to be the major difference in comfort and that will not be a problem since I have a big neck, but I hope they don't clamp in a way that makes them less fun.  I would consider another pair of 650s but the used/refurb market seems to be flooded with the older model with the silk driver cover, which is not my preference.  Since I use different setups for home theater and music listening, I think it is reasonable to shift the 650s into home theater duty and invest a bit more into FLAC listening.

I find Audezes with the leather pads to be more comfortable than the Hifimans with velours despite the weight, maybe because their bigger, closer pads distribute the weight better.

That is what I have heard, and why I am not considering the HE-500 and the HE-6 as an option.  Also because I keep reading that if you love the sound of the HD650 you will find something familiar in the LCD-2, yet comprehensively better.

Hey man, welcome.

I have to agree with Claritas, the Audeze phones even though somewhat heavy are extremely comfy even when I do a many hour session with them on.  Tons of padding everywhere which distributes the weight nicely.  Good phones for sure, though I tend to prefer my Grados for when I have the heavier music on.  But I don't see you having that issue since you use the 650s currently.
