AKG K601 vs K612

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two headphones?

I'm looking for one pair to replace my K240's

I use the Little Dot III and mainly listen to all types of rock.

I've read that K612 has a bit more bass.  They should otherwise be the same.

Why not step up to the awesome Q701?  It drops in price to the same as K601/612 now and then.

Thanks Max.

I'm also considering the Q's.

Cheers!

As with K702 and K712, the latter uses larger drivers and non-angled pads so the sound should be rather different from the original; can't say how, probably more bass and low mids if it's similar to the charts for K712. Also, neither Kx12 model has the bumps on the headband.

Edit: Maybe the drivers are the same size.

Are you talking about the 602 and 612's, Claritas?

I was comparing K702 and K712, and trying to figure out based on that comparison what K612 might be like.

Reports and charts indicate that K712 has significantly more bass and low mids than K702; if they're right, I'm thinking that K612 does too.

Both of the newer Kx12 models also have straight pads and no bumps, but K712 has a detachable cable and K612 doesn't.

What an annoying numbering system! It all made sense till they made all of the K701 variants, though partly this serves to designate production periods.

Only the K712 is a  completely new driver. K612 uses the same driver as K601, just an "improved" housing, as it was stated somewhere at the begining of the thread. K701 and K712 do not share the same driver (obvious when you look at uncompensated frequency graphs), while K612 and K601 supposedly do.

If you're right, then it's poorly named. Should have been 601-II or 602.

Since there are no measurements of the k612 on the web I can't tell for sure but I think someone asked akg support about k601vs k612 and thats what he/she was told. I've read that supposedly K612 is slightly bassier than K601 but who knows? Maybe its just unit to unit variation.

Well I got my 601's and I LOVE them!

I also bought the HD558's which can't touch them in transparency.

beerchug.gif Then you won't need to do any bass mods. Enjoy!

I decided to run the signal through my McIntosh Pre-amp where I can fine-tune annoying frequencies from some recordings and add or reduce bass when needed.
