Desktop Amp Vs HiFi Amp

Thread Starter

I've visited here quite a few times the past few years.

I have a few questions for you guys. I hate to be "that guy" that posts questions that have been answered before...

Here we go.

I currently have 2 audio set-ups.

I have one for my turntable and one for my desktop PC.

Turntable:

Linn sondek LP12

Yamaha AS500

wharfedale diamond 10.1 speakers

Desktop:

Fiio E& and E9 combo connected with usb

M-Audio AV 30 Speakers connected to the fiio e9 line-out

Headphones:

AKG702s

I mostly use my headphones for these setups.

Do you guys see anything wrong with my setup?

I really feel I need an upgrade but can't put my finger on where?

If I connect my desktop PC to my yamaha amp and speakers would I get a better sound than I do with the Fiio and M-audio speaker setup?

Should I get a new desktop amp?

You could run an RCA cable from the E9's RCA line-outputs to the RCA line-inputs on the Yamaha.

(I'm guessing when the E7 is docked to the E9, the the E7's DAC output is sent to the E9's RCA output)

I would assume the Yamaha/Diamond would be an improvement over the MV30s.

Might also try the AKG 702 plugged into the Yamaha's headphone jack, see how it comes to the E9.

Maybe get an ODAC ($150) external USB DAC, Hook it up between the computer and the Yamaha, then use the Yamaha for both speaker and headphones audio.

Thanks for your reply.

I think I'm just going to buy a new DAC. It seems more convenient to run them all from my yamaha amp (also saves space on my desk).

Another quest....

With that setup, what would I use for the volume control? Wou,d I put the DAC volume all the way to 100 and use my amp to control?

thanks.

DACs usually do not have a volume control.

Best would be to turn up the volume on the PC, as high as possible and just use the Yamaha's volume knob.

Hifimediy Sabre U2 USB DAC, $57+shipping

Schiit Modi USB DAC, $99.

ODAC USB DAC, $150

Guess you could sell off the E7/E9 for some cash.

oh..ok.

I just thought they did cause the E9 has one.

I think I may go with the ODAC.

lol I don't think anyone would want to buy a second hand E7/E9. They are cheap enough brand new. I think I may give it away to someone or it will just catch dust under my bed.

Auction the E7/E9 on eBay.

Hopefully get the USB DAC and make sure it sounds better (using the Yamaha) then using the E7/E9.
