I just bought a new pair of headphones as my ATH A700s finally broke after about 3 years. I was previously only using my onboard sound (Realtek ALC 892). They sounded amazing to me, but that was probably because I upgraded from basic "gaming headsets". I had it narrowed down to ATH M50s and The DT 770s.. but I have a large head and was worried about the M50s being too tight. Never the less, I went with the DT 770s and so far they are superb! (80 ohms).
Now that I have a little bit of a budget.... I was looking into getting a real soundcard and/or amp. Upon reading, I am finding SO many different opinions and I really do not know what to do. I originally was looking at the Xonar DGX. However, I have found a lot of people talking about the DX. Some are arguing that the SQ is better on the DX even with no amp for your headphones like the one that comes with the DG/DGX. Is the Xonar ST leaps above the DG in sound quality? I have seen all these FiiO amps, and I'm just completely lost now. I know sound is all subjective to each person, but I'm totally lost. I dont mind getting a sound card with a built in amp, as I would never take these headphones elsewhere. For on the go, I use cheapy little Sennheiser HD 201s.
I generally listen to 320 KBPS music in genres as follows: Trap, Hardstyle, Electronic etc. But I also listen to a fair bit of Heavy Metal as well. I game, a lot. However, I'm really trying to focus on the quality of my music over gaming if needed. (Dont play any FPS seriously). Just play League, Wow, SC etc. If any of that matters.
In conclusion, I dont mind spending $200 on the ST/STX if it will last me for years. Or is the DG/DGX comparable in quality for someone new like me? Also (not a problem if) do I need a separate amp with the DG? Or would I want to get a DX with a separate amp? Totally unsure on all this.
