I went from using the ATH-ANC7b's to the ATH-M50's with a Fiio E11. I've been side by side comparing the headphones without EQ, with EQ and with the E11 and I basically can't tell the difference. There is a chance I'm hearing more base with the M50's and I'm hearing more base with the E11 but it may just be placebo. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S3 as the audio source. Multiple people say the M50's sound a lot better as well as saying the E11 makes music sound better. Is it just me that's not able to recognize the difference? Will using the E11 make my phone's battery last longer as opposed to only using the phone to play music? Did I basically just waste a bunch of money? http://i57.tinypic.com/2e1gdoi.jpg

I'm certainly green about here but I might be able to help a tad. First off what is it you're looking for? It appears to be sound quality from your post. Based on the little I know about amps I'd ask 1) have both sets of phones been burned in for the amount of time recommended? 2) does the phone you are using have an on-board amp and if so is a line-out option available? 3) Does the fact that the first set of phones you listed happen to be noise cancelling (active) have any bearing on the situation? Also what is the quality of the music you're playing, if you are using music that is of a lower quality I'd suggest trying out the free sampler from HDtracks and doing another comparison.
