Mistake? DT770 Pro 32 ohm Troubleshooting.

Hello Head-fi,

A Bit of Background:

I have done an extensive amount of research on what pair of headphones to purchase and decided on the DT770 Limited Edition 32ohm. I bought these and they came yesterday! These were my first official pair of “audiophile headphones.” (My past experiences have been the QuietComfort 15’s and Monster Diamond Tear Headphones.)

My Problem: **I mistakenly purchased the DT770 PRO 32 ohm version. NOT THE LIMITED EDITION.**

My Goal: EVENTUALLY, I want to have both a home and portable headphone/amp/dac setup.

Here is what I was personally thinking of:

1)      Home Setup – Schiit Magni/Modi with Sennheiser HD598.

2)      Portable Setup – FiiO E07k with the ATH-M50x’s and/or DT770’s.

***Tell me what you think/What I should consider***

1)      What have any of you heard about the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 32 ohm?

a.       What is your experience of the headphone?

2)      Is the DT770 Pro 80 ohm version better (quality of sound) than the DT770 Pro 32?

a.       Is the E07k a good pair/choice for the DT770 80 ohm’s?

3)      Should I keep them and buy the ATH-M50’s instead?

4)      What should I do?

a.       Are my DT770 Pro 32 ohm headphones worth keeping?

Your insight is extremely valuable to me. Like I said, I am newer to the headphone field, therefore I need wisdom from those who are experienced.

Thank you!

It's not the end of the world if you got the pro version (unless you paid the premium for the LE but wound up with the pro by mistake). The sound is reasonably similar. I think the LE version had higher sensitivity so could go louder. I'm pretty sure you can't buy the LE anymore though, unless you found it used.

If you're considering the FiiO e07k for portable use, you might as well consider pairing it with the e09k for home rather than spend money on an additional dac.

1&2) Either is fine and not a huge difference if your amp has a low enough output impedance. The 32/80 ohm versions react oddly with amps that have a high output impedance due to the impedance peak in the headphone frequency response. This is less of a concern with the 250/600 ohm models, because while the peaks are still there the effects are less so. However, those models require substantially more power to deliver the same loudness. I haven't specifically paired the DT770/80 with the e07k, but I think it should be ok.

3) M50 vs DT770... The Beyer has better isolation, durability, and more bass. The M50 is foldable/more portable, slightly less misbass hump.

4) I can't answer that for you. There are plenty of options out there. Give them a listen and see if you like them. If not and it doesn't cost anything to return, then there's nothing to lose.

Thank you for the reply. It honestly means a lot to me that you took the time to answer my questions.

Do you, by chance, know how much the LE was? I paid $180. (http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-770-PRO-32-Headphone-Monitoring-Applications/dp/B008POFOHM)

Great idea with the E09k! I've heard positive things about both the E07k and the E09k dock.

- Is the E09k a DAC too? All I know is that it's a high output dock amp.

- Any other information regarding both of the E0_k's that you can give me?

When I put them on and listened for the first time, I was stunned. I know it may sound lame, but the sound quality was a definite advancement from both my QC15's and the Monster Diamond Tears I returned. They are a bit bigger than I expected, but that's okay because they encompass my entire ear. The DT770's are extremely comfortable too. I listened for 3 hours continuously and didn't feel any pain or throbbing at all.

I think I'm going to keep them. I bought the Velour Ear Pads which I believe I will install tonight for a bit more comfort. All-in-all, it's a pretty good purchase to start me off :)

Again, thank you. I appreciate it.

I don't recall the exact price, but I think it was around $200.

The e09k is not a dac. It is only an amp that happens to have a dock input but can take standard RCA input as well (it also has an RCA output so it can function as a preamp). Great bang for the buck as a budget amp. I had the e17k and e09k pairing for a brief bit, along with the matching a1 speaker amp.

The QC15... great noise cancelling, nice comfort, and that's about it. I tried the Tears once, and regretted it immediately.

Velour pads will usually diminish bass slightly (depends on the fit) and perhaps tame a bit off the treble, but most find them more comfortable as well.

Thank you for clearing up my misconception on the E09k. I think I might pull the trigger on either the E07k or the E17k for my DT770's. We'll see.

As for the QC15's, I believe I'm going to sell them. And after hearing the DT770 Pro 32ohm, I'm glad I decided to return the Diamond Tears.

Thanks again,
