Headphone upgrade from Shure SRH440 (open circumnaural)

Thread Starter

Just made my account after months of reading head-fi and not commenting. Current headphones: Soundmagic PL50 (In-Ear) and Shure SRH440. I'm also currently awaiting the Aurisonics Rockets from their kickstarter campaign (rainbow finish and mic).

I've been wanting to upgrade my SRH440's to a circumnaural, open headphone for a few months now. I listen to almost every genre of music with the exception of most country songs lol so these headphones will need to be able to competently reproduce a wide range of genres. I was considering the AKG Q701 because there's really just a lot of things I like about it, but I have no way of testing them out for a lack of a headphone store in my area or any decent dealers. Also, I'm beginning to make my own music (mostly dubstep/trap) and would like to be able to use them as studio headphones.

If anyone has any suggestions, the headphones need to have:

- Removable cable

- Open-back design

- Reasonably flat Frequency Response

- Something that can be worn for around 3 or more hours at a time

- Not an especially fatiguing sound

- Around $250 or under

Thank you guys!

For under $100 you can get the AKG K 240 Studio.  I recommend an amp with them, although they are easier to drive than the Q 701, which is superior in all respects--if you like a large sound stage and don't need the impact of a smaller one.

The DT 880 fails to meet one or more of your requirements.

Thanks for the suggestion KG. I'll definately be looking into the k240. Also on amps, I was planning on using the schiit magni/modi stack. This would be sufficient for both the k240 and the q701, correct?

The Schiit stack will do the job.
