This is not good news. The Ikea Expedit shelving units work great for vinyl record storage and are/were much less expensive than most dedicated record storage systems. However back in the glory days of vinyl (as in before the CD was introduced) Ikea had several other shelving units which could hold vinyl records quite nicely.

The above photo is of a nice black wood unit with 2X2 divisions (with a back) that was available from Ikea. I don't remember the name. It holds about 330 LPs (4 times 80+ LPs per division)

The above photo shows another shelving unit that was once available from Ikea. This is dark brown, also with a back, 2x4 divisions and holds about 560 LPs (8 times 70+/- LPs per division)

The above photo shows the my small little piece of the holy grail of record storage - the old fashioned solid metal milk crate, sadly discontinued by the US dairy industry sometime in the 1970s. Each milk crate could hold approximately 70 LPs and the crates could be easily stacked. There were two slightly different sized units (look at the space above the LPs on the top row versus the the slightly smaller space above the LPs on the lower units) but both sizes worked great. The real beauty of this storage "system" is that the crates can be moved without removing the LPs since each crate has built in carrying handles.

The milk crates were available free of charge at select supermarket loading docks after normal business hours. I was able to obtain 15 of these wonderful crates and have them stacked 5 high by 3 wide for a total storage of approximately 1050 LPs.

It's not going away completely.  They are replacing the expedit shelving system with a new version with thinner outer walls probably as a cost cutting/environmental descision.  Forgot the name of it though.
