Next Purchase after Asus Xonar U3 USB

Thread Starter

Last year I started getting back into headphones and with the help of this forum purchased the Sennheiser HD380. That really got me into headphone listening again. I use the HD 380 and also the Grado sr60 to listen to music (jazz and classical chamber music) and some movies on my laptop, Sony mp3, and Samsung Tablet. Also with the help of this forum I started to get my music into a flac and WAV format and heard a great improvement. I like to tinker and experiment and do things incrementally. As a prelude to learning about DAC and Amps, I purchased the Asus Xonar U3 usb. For $40 that is a great product. I do use the Jazz and Classical setting as well as the Movie setting. I enjoy the Dolby Headphone setting on some of the music, such as Jazz music with large bands. I also see an impact with the different gain settings with the amp portion of the U3. I am now thinking about the next product I need to get and would appreciate some input. The U3 only works on my laptop, so I was thinking of replacing that with a Fiio e7 (DAC/Amp), so I could use with laptop as well as Sony mp3 and Samsung Tablet. However, I got to thinking is it possible to interconnect the headphone output of the Asus Xonar U3 usb to a Fiio e11(Amp only) and then to Headphones. I am ignorant on this, so this may be a silly question, it just seems like I can, but I have no way of testing. If I could do this, I could get a better amp in the e11 and not give up on the Asus Xonar DAC which I do like with the laptop. The DAC of the e7 cannot be used by the Sony mp3, even with a line out doc connection; the Sony could only use the e7 amp part.

The U3 is essentially a DAC/Amp. Hooking it up to a Filo e7 is pointless and redundant.

You'll get the effects like dolby headphones.

I use my u3 optical out for my DAC, which hasn't got usb input. It's quite handy to have around for the optical output.
