Loving my AKG 240 Studio and wanting to upgrade to AKG K702: worth it?

Hello everybody,

This is my first post on Head-Fi although I have been reading through its reviews and forums for a while now. I thought that after all the searching, it might just be easier and nicer to actually ask the question to the community.

TL;DR

Need suggestions for setting up a PC/Mac based headphone hi-fi system. I own and love AKG 240 Studio and I would like to buy a worthy "upgraded" version of those. I thought about the K702.

Need also recommendation on USB DAC/Amp to go with those.

Intended use: Music and Gaming. Music: Flac (Qobuz) but mostly 320k mp3 (Spotify); gaming: Red Orchestra 2, Skyrim, The Secret World to name a few.

Please do not answer if you don't own (or have owned) both headphones.

When suggesting amps please consider that I live in EU (some US models are not distributed here)

Total budget: Euro 500/USD 700

Thanks

Nicely detailed version

As the title says, I have been having the AKG 240 studio for many years (I remember when I bought them the Euro had just been introduced) and I have been using them plugged directly to my PC for listening to music (mp3 and Flac), movies and games.

I turned 30 last week and I though I might gift myself with a "sound upgrade", starting with the headphones and adding a decent (yet portable) DAC/Amp to drive them appropriately.

Since I already own an AKG and I have been enjoying it a lot, staying with the brand looked like the obvious choice. Reading in this forums that all 70x models sound the same, I thought K702 might be the optimal pick.

I would like to stress the fact that I really like how the 240 sound, I like the sound signature, the soundstage, the bass quality and quantity. What I want is a headphone that does everything the 240 do, but with increased quality.

My intended use consists in music (some Flac from Qobuz but mostly Spotify 320k mp3) and A LOT of gaming (FPS, RPGs, MMORPGs).

In games immersion is key to me: I want the headphones to render the "atmosphere" of the game being able to capture every detail and giving the sense of space (much like a movie).

Leaving aside the Amp/DAC matter, my main question is: are the K702 the headphones what I am looking for? (If not, can you suggest other brands?)

If you could also recommend a USB amp/DAC to go with the headphones it would be much appreciated!

As I wrote above, my total budget (headphones + amp) is about 700 Dollars.

Thank you!

I've owned (and still own) a number of vintage versions of the K240 (which many headfiers agree are better than the modern 'studio' version) and I've auditioned the various K7** on a number of occasions, and I think you can do better than these when gaming is concerned.

I recommend a Beyerdynamic DT990 for gaming.

Thank you for your answer :)

After having listened to both Beyer 990 and 880 and Q701 I decided to buy the latter. I guess my ears have been "educated" to the AKG sound.

I have also ordered the Soundblaster X-fi HD (USB) together with them, but reading through the forums here I will probably have to buy an amp to complete the chain (probably the Fiio E11/E9) to stay within budget.
