I recently started to take headphone audio semi seriously so I built my first audiophile-esk set up as follows.
HiFimeDIY Sabre U2 Async DAC --> Little Dot MKIII --> HD650's
Now having never owned a proper dedicated headphone amp before and not really knowing what I was doing I looked around and found people recommending tube amps for the 650. I thought I would give it go and went with the LD MKIII, don't get me wrong its excellent little amp but after 2 weeks of listening to most of my music collection I've found quite a few songs that seem to be to forward with the base and sound rather boomy. I've tried paying around with the gain settings and found gain 10 and 5 to have far to much bass thought the whole range, gain 3/4 sound the best to me but on some recordings I cant get any signification volume from the amp I just feel as if I want to turn it up but its already maxed out. I first thought it was my DAC causing the issue as I started out with a MUSE DIR9001 4X TDA1543 NOS which was frankly awful and sounded worse than my on board from the PC. So I went for the Sabre U2 which helped with but the bass still seems to boomy for my taste and has significant electrical interference from the PC. I'm starting to think its not the source that's the issue but rather the nature of a tube amp and maybe I should look for a solid state amp.
Now my question is I can sell the LD and for not allot more money get the Schiit Magini/Mod. Will 650's pair well with this combo or will I be side grading to a cheaper amp and end up in the opposite situation. Thanks.
