Long time reader, first post! Tremendous wealth of info here, made me move from NO music for the last couple of decades to full-on "ear-fi" listener. Based on the recommendations here, now have:
1) portable rig for work: an ifi iDSD nano connected to a Firestone Fireye HD amp with an iPhone 5s and Onkyo HF app as the source, usually listen through a pair of Soundmagic E10's;
2) desktop: Macbook Pro i7 with iTunes/BitPerfect to a Nuforce u192s USB->SPDIF adapter, feeding a Firestone Fubar IV Plus and Schitt Vali amp. Sounds amazing thru my Senn 598's.
Coming from old Koss Pro-4aa's (with the liquid-filled pads!), Senn 414's and 424's (those seemed to have disappeared over many moves), late 1970's amplification and vinyl... the leap in sound quality is hard to describe for this old man.
Still have a lot of early 80's vinyl, my JVC QL-5 turntable and Satin M18bx MC cart, plus a few other odds 'n ends (my Yamaha B2/C2 combo and JBL L112's are on loan to my son in Denver), but I'm having too much fun rediscovering my "classic" CD collection via direct acoustic coupling to my ears!
