I do give it benefit of doubt since it's not burned in (given that if burn-in does make it significantly better), but it didn't exactly just come out of the package yet the sound was so muddy that I didn't bother to listen to it for too long. It did sound very vivid though, which was something I didn't expect from an BA IEM. I had also tried its unbalanced cable unintentionally because I was given the IEM with the unbalanced cable at the beginning, so I was able to do a comparison of unbalanced vs balanced. Balanced was definitely better, but not as big a difference comparing to unbalanced IE800 vs balanced IE800, so I guess unbalanced vs balanced does vary from IEM to IEM.

Thanks to the demoing now I appreciate my balanced IE800 even more.darthsmile.gif
The Roxane better work with home app
So it did disappoint me either ....

Forgot to answer the 2nd part... AKR03 is supposed to have "5 significant differences" comparing to Roxanne according to certain magazine but I don't have that magazine ^^;. Japan's iriver site does say though that it's specifically tuned for AK240, especially the bass:

I plugged my UERM's in at a show. Awesome. Still trying to justify the AK240 since I already have the 120.

I was underwhelmed with my first demo on a brand new akr03 last week. Similar to what you found it wasn't transparent and overall very intimate and a bit dark.

However I managed to get a JH uni rox and another AKR03 that's been run a bit more and they do sound materially different and imo better. Seems the AK version has more bass and more forward mods than the JH version. But I'm not sure if it's just a difference caused by different mileage on them or they are indeed tuned that way. In any case please try to demo again sometime down the road. As much as I don't buy burning in, I have to acknowledge I do hear these three pairs quite differently even with same setup (DAP/files/bass setting/tips).

My interest in the rox has a lot to do with its unique bass setup but now that I also heard the new tralucant ref1, I am not quite sure if I will still get the roxanne as the ref1 bass is just on a totally different level of impact and texture than ANYTHING I heard with headfiers gears (full-size included)..... the short demo made my phones' bass all seems wrong now frown.gif

Just wanted to say that it's been incredible fun catching up with everyone's impressions so far.  I just went through 30 pages at once, and I am seeing both consistency and a an overall consensus forming.

Yup!  http://www.head-fi.org/t/707432/review-astell-kern-ak240  It's an amazing pairing, IMO.

I agree 100%.

Sam, jw111 sold his AK120 and picked up an AK240.  He struggled for about a week trying to convince himself that the AK120 would be enough.  He failed.

Yup, this is one of those cases where nothing we say could compare to the actual experience.  If we try to be reserved about the AK240, that wouldn't be complete or thorough.  If we try to describe our true level of enjoyment from it, it just sounds like hype.  It's gotten to the point where I just want to tell people "don't listen to us, go listen to an AK240."

Speaking of listening to an AK240... if anyone is in a position to go to one of the events in my sig, that would be a good place to get an audition in.

I heard the AK240 and the Chord Hugo side by side at the So Cal show. The AK240 was clearly better than my AK120 but the Hugo still won. I can live with my decision. As you know there's another show at the end of the summer in LA. Hopefully they'll have the next player by then and I can successfully skip a generation.

I still hope they'll make an AK480 someday.  When Amos and I were making up the specs, there was a forlorn moment when we found ourselves actually wanting it... because, you know... some of those features sounded pretty cool.

Not that sure comparisons between the AK240 and the Hugo can be properly made. For example, you say the Hugo won,but I guess everything was single ended. Would it have been the same going balanced with the AK240? And results could be different with different headphones.

I think there's room in the middle of their lineup now too. AK180?

Hmm, what features would it have to have, and how good would it have to sound, in order to be worth $1,899?  I would give up all of the wireless stuff, and deal with a low-res screen, and a smaller screen at that.  But I would want to keep the SQ, UI and balanced out.

I believe the black and white one is their silver shadow mk2. Takumi is their latest flagship but yes they have the same weaving pattern:

I spot Japanese and the Tokyo headphone festival is this weekend. Damn.

I recall the reason was just to piss people off after the April Fools' prank. :p

Nah, that cables made by Labcable in Hong Kong, so heavy n thick, felt almost like a belt.
