Nope you can't compare.

The AK240 is better also more portable.

I own a CLAS (DAC for iDevices) + ALO audio Rx Mk3b. Connected to the iPod, it's quite a way from the AK240 sq-wise. There's an open-ness to the 240 that just isn't there in my stack, and I would say that for a (generally) portable rig with an idevice as a source, you can'y really get much better than what I have so to show it a fairly clean pair of heels is something. Is it a $2.5k something? That's for you to decide for yourself. Some people spend hundreds on perms.

Regardless of what the iPod is, it's meant really for playing music satisfactorily through a pair of ear pods. It can do it through much better headphones/iem's but it's designed for a more general purpose than something like the 240. The AK240 is basically a device designed to reproduce music in the most accurate way possible with only one limitation of portability. It's like using really good DAC and amps fed from a general purpose Sony dvd player vs. a really good one-box CD player. You can do what you want, but it's a lot to do with your source and how things interface within the system.

(It was unfortunate that I did not get to hear the iPod->Hugo combo, playing the same file to compare. I still think the Hugo from a PC sounds better than the AK240 playing the same file, but it's close.)

Feel free to not buy the AK240. It doesn't cost them $2500 to make, that's for sure. But they're a commercial entity not a charity. There are other DAP's out there that are better value - the X5 and the DX90 come to mind. Is the AK240 6x better? I cannot answer for you, but I urge you to give it a try. Bring decent iem's. And a lot of money, in case you change your mind :)

Wow - just experienced a volume spike, a la what I've experienced with my DX50.  Hopefully my IE800's - and my ears - survived.  The AK was being powered via wall wart, last album had finished playing and was sitting there at the end of the last song (it should've turned off based on my settings but power options don't work properly for me).  I searched by artist, selected play all for one and bam!  Not good.

Yes this too has happened to me twice actually after sitting for a while as well but I noticed it after it had played DSD files only not after FLAC, AIFF, or other files...only DSD as I listen to it all the time even when I go to sleep most nights......

Ah - I believe the last album I played was in fact a DSD album I listened to while falling asleep last night!

Yes that must be it .....I thought it was maybe only a glitch of some kind ....but it was a screeching sound very loud ....I was like whooaaaa...so whenever I fall asleep with DSD files playing and it sits idle for some time when wake or come back to it I turn it off first then back on before playing .....I do notice if it's plugged into the wall and it's fully charged for a while when playing that you can hear slight static in the line ...only if it's fully charged if not you will not hear it ....that's what I love about this baby, the background is so black....it's like a void...all you hear is music and precise instruments with placement .....I'll take some of these small bugs any day for what it's given me so far....some people I knew thought I was a little off because I purchased this straight out...didn't even listen to it ....I just had a gut feeling it was going to be something special...

Exactly - a very loud screeching sound describes it well.  I'll definitely start taking precautions after playing DSD files - that was a very unpleasant experience!

I also notice some static while charging through the wall wart - I wasn't sure if anyone else was experiencing that as well.

Thanks for the feedback! Initially I was thinking of buying the Hugo and use it with my iphone, but now I am beginning to have second thoughts.  One thing that I don't like about DAP's is the storage limit. What I love about the iphone is that I can upload all my high rez files to my cloud and stream them from there without being limited by the storage size on my phone/dap. And with 4G connection now it's even better. What do you think?

I'd say that this was not a relevant question for the AK240 impressions thread.

Well, it is. I am trying to decided between the AK420 and HUGO. I can't buy them both at the same time just so I could compare them, so I have to make up my mind now. Any help would greatly appreciated, guys.

Not sure you can really compare iCloud streaming to a lossless rip on the AK240.
