If the DAC built into, let's say, an iPhone only natively supports up to 24/48 (as I had previously read), I don't understand how software can handle sampling rates greater than 48 without downsampling. Perhaps the DACs in recent iterations of Apple devices actually have high rez DACs that haven't been fully employed ...

Hi jwbrent,

If the hardware inside the iOS device does not support it, than software can't help it.

I didn't clarify, but I meant to say that with an App like the one I linked to, you can feed an external dac with high res (beyond 48k sample) with a CCK, or if

the device is compatible (like the iFi iDSD)...

So maybe Apple will require you to use an App they develop for their HD downloads?

If this Apple HD rumor is true, I think it will be a win for our niche and will raise more awareness to the masses, like Pono is doing.

How about DAC, does the iDevicd need to equipp with DAC that could handle 24/96 hi res files?

I don't know of any DACs, other than one (which the iDevices never used) that can't handle them. More importantly, Apple-authorised DACs that use a LOD cable to get the digital signal out are all future-proofed, so if Apple does allow high-res output then they'll work with that. Every DAC or the like that can be used through the CCK one way or another via USB should work too.

I'm talking about the DACs within the iPod/iPad/iPhone, are they capable of handling hi res files?

Of course, if you mean lossless.  ALAC should work fine, for other formats, you have to download an app that supports other lossless formats.

Regarding 24bit, I don't believe they are capable, but you can connect a camera kit to it to an external DAC to play in that resolution.

OMG!! I have to share my just-now-discovery with my fellow 240ers. I created a folder on my 240 with the same name as a playlist in iTunes. Selected the entire playlist (multiple formats) dragged to the folder and it downloaded in seconds perfectly!! No need to recreate playlists, just transfer whatcha' got. Use folders as playlists. And I have album artwork!  'Course DSD, Flac, etc. ain't there, but if you're going from an iPod, how easy. And the improved sound quality is noticeable.

That said, I can't get MQS Streaming to work. Tho I loaded the software it keeps opening and immediately closing. Any suggestions appreciated.

Indeed, that will work. I have a lot of tracks that are in multiple playlists, so it's a bad idea for me.

Do you have the latest version of the server?

Indeed, with tracks that are in multiple playlists, you will eat unnecessary storage by having the same file stored several times ...
I didn't realize every load of a playlist duplicated the individual file! Thanks for pointing that out-but I have many playlist with a file only there, so I' can still take the easy way.
I do have the latest server and it won't load. I river support working on it.

Well, I have about 150 hours on my replacement 240 and it's just now beginning to sound like it should. Still some grain in the mids, but that will go away in another 100 hours or so. I believe the 240 needs a minimum of 300 hours of burn-in for it to start sounding liquidy ... 400 even better.

Agreed.  My 240 went through some rough patches around some 100 hours and was sound awful at one point.  Now is getting better and hope it will further improve over time.
