I posted this a couple of other places. Maybe our AK240 will play good iTunes bought music.

It is reported that iOS devices can playback 24/192 via an App like this one:

http://www.uk.onkyo.com/en/articles/onkyo-hf-player-app-offers-precision-equalizer-192-24-playback-on-ios-devices-96729.html

So maybe Apple will require you to use an App they develop for their HD downloads?

If this Apple HD rumor is true, I think it will be a win for our niche and will raise more awareness to the masses, like Pono is doing.

Hey my friends, listen to some good music all day long :  http://www.customchannels.net/streaming/mcintosh/       enjoy....

Great, my AK-240 is locking up, freezing, not wanting to play DSD. And when I try to play certain DSD files it plays at 4x speed, with no sound. Anybody got any advice?

After thinking about the article it did occur to me that Apple would also sell a iDevice to play natively what its store sells. So, maybe Apple will enter the Hi Rez playing DAP market. If they do with their UI and quality, making sure the holy trinity of, DAC chip, AMP power, lots of storage is paid attention to, then, they will own the that segment of the market.

Have you done a hard restart? On my 120 that meant holding the power button and the reply button on the side at the same time. Shoot kh, i'm sorry to hear this. At the worst A&K will give you a new player. If you need help contacting them PM me.

Thanks, I'll try a hard restart later, if that doesn't work, I'm pulling out the Jack hammer and blow torch..

Hi kh,

I'm sorry you're having troubles ... I've been there and know how it feels. I would suggest doing a system reset although this will wipe the contents of your memory.

As Saraguie offered, feel free to PM me if you need any help dealing with A&K; however, I strongly urge you to reach out to your dealer to call Jimmy and get things in motion if indeed you need a replacement.

I received my factory sealed replacement AK240 today.

I knew it was going to arrive, but generally the UPS truck for my area comes in the late afternoon (I live in the mountains in northern CA). I woke up this morning to go to my yoga class, and for some reason I didn't feel like going‚ÄĒunusual for me since I'm religious about my yoga practice; I go to my studio 3-4 times a week. Anyway, the universe was looking out after me since the UPS truck showed up in the early morning, and if I had gone to my class, I would have missed the delivery since a signature was required.

First thing:¬†my new sample is perfect from an aesthetic standpoint, in fact, it's even better than my old unit since the volume knob has less wiggle to it and the aluminum surface is more uniform‚ÄĒmy old unit had striations in the metal, especial on the upper right corner bevel.

Second thing: the serial number that is engraved on the unit appears to be a production number since the new number is exactly the same as the old number other than the few letters afterwards. For those interested in this, my old number was 2K80791403KVWEQ and my new number is 2K80791403GOOAK. I mention this because I recall Jimmy asking a recent member with a problem to provide the number on the box sleeve, not the unit itself.

Third thing: I decided to regain about 100MB of memory by discarding the Contents folder.

I'm loading up all my music as we speak, so the withdrawals I've been going through for the past week are soon about to end ... :D

And Jimmy, if you're reading this, thank you for all your help.

Yeah, I'll mess with it tonight, I guess wiping, the drive is better then replacing the unit . Pain in the butt either way. At $2500 , you expect a first class experience. Seems to be a lot of problems, with a bunch of units. Ordered my Noble K-10's yesterday , can't wait to try them out with the AK.

Hi Vinnie,

I recently read in The Absolute Sound or Stereophile that these apps are available for IOS devices as well as Android devices. If the DAC built into, let's say, an iPhone only natively supports up to 24/48 (as I had previously read), I don't understand how software can handle sampling rates greater than 48 without downsampling. Perhaps the DACs in recent iterations of Apple devices actually have high rez DACs that haven't been fully employed ...

I checked the iTunes store and found a few apps that not only claim 24/192 support, but also FLAC support.

Frankly, Apple is late in getting into the game of releasing high rez files. Enjoythemusic has an article mentioning HDtracks reporting¬†significant growth in sales last year, a trend that has continued since 2008. Apple's iPod sales continue to decline each quarter; if they were to release an iPod that had the new Wolfson 24/192 low battery consumption DAC and provide another upgrade option to its customers to pay a small fee to upgrade their libraries‚ÄĒa la iTunes Plus files that eliminated DRM and took the original 128kbps AAC files to 256kbps for .29 cents each‚ÄĒthey could have a monster revenue stream from music files and hardware sales. Also, this limitation of memory on iPods, other than the Classic, of 64GB has to change; Apple has signed long term contracts with memory suppliers, so they could raise the memory to 256GB without too much cost increase to the consumer.

I would be very surprised if Apple doesn't do just this sometime this year ...

Addendum:

Neil Young has raised nearly 6 million dollars in a month long kickstarter campaign for the Pono. I believe his success has something to do with the fact that he's enlisted scores of music artists to vouch for the superiority of 24/192 files over lossy files and has awakened the youth market to the fact that they have been listening to low rez for most of their lives. Look at the continued upward trend on vinyl sales, again, especially with the 20-30s crowd. Apple can capitalize on all this marketing by upgrading the iTunes store and all their IOS products.

Addendum 2:

I am long on APPL.

Addendum 3:

Apple is launching a major upgrade to the iTunes store ...

Hi Saraguie,

I hope you had a good trip.

I just noticed your post, so my apologies for seemingly stomping on it. :D
