Music file : WAV 16 bit / 44,4 KHz
Headphone : LCD XC
Cable : SAA Endorphin balance 4 Pin > use 4 Pin adapter to mini plug > AK 240
Equaleiser : Off
Power / volume control : 65 - 70

My impression :

Like what i Said in my previous impression in another AK 240 thread , that AK 240 sound quality is Only Good to very Good to drive Low Impedance headphone like LCD 3

My analogy
The amp on AK 240 is like 1500 cc motor Engine , i can drive My 1500 cc motor Engine to Speed until 120 km / h.
But The Power is just enough .no reserse Power to drive more Speed .
If i have more Power / bigger Power like in My car 2400 cc , For sure i can drive to The Speed 120 km/H , the result is different , more stabil , has more Power reserse
Compare to 1500 cc motor Engine .

I heard The sound quality from LCD XC is not so optimal like i drive use external amp

IMO

I agree 100% with you, the same goes for my HD-800, in Balanced mode,on the AK-240 it sounds fabulous , but just not enough Horsepower . Now after spending all that money, I may need to spend more on a good portable amp...

I agree AK240 is more suitable for low impedance, easy to drive headphones. Based on my test on AK240 vs Hugo at Jaben Singapore, AK240 single-ended output can drive the 300-Ohm Sennheiser HD800 sonically but lacks the power to satisfy the volume/body of the music to an optimal level. However, AK240 synergizes really well with the 25-Ohm Fostex TH900. I heard the same exact volume/body directly from AK240 SE and from the Hugo's 3.5mm out. If we just compare their specifications on paper, LCD-XC actually has slightly lower impedance than TH900, but TH900 works well and not the LCD-XC. The 45-Ohm LCD-3 and the 22-Ohm LCD-XC are both planar magnetic which are very sensitive to the power of the amp compared to normal dynamic driver headphones and probably pose an challenge to AK240's single-ended output. Maybe the balanced out can help to boost the power output so at least we can see a better SQ from the Audeze cans.

Hi rudi,

Did you feel there was too much of an upper mid prominence with the 240 and XCs? I'm getting my XCs tomorrow and that is a concern I have since to my ears, the 240 has an elevated upper midrange. I now have about 100 hours on my 240 and it definitely has warmed up, but it is brighter sounding than my AK120. My ESW9s, however, work very nicely with the 240.

I'm selling my AK120 in the classifieds and thinking about using the money to get the ALO modified IE800s with the 2.5mm TRRS plug. kh600rr, how do you like your 800s with the 240? I owned a pair of IE8s a while back, and other than a slightly veiled midrange, I was happy with them.

Thanks for your reply. Well, I suppose that means a cable upgrade. "Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in." :D

Moon Audio, they made me a good deal on the AK-240, and a Black Dragon V-2 Preminum cable, they put a quick connect end on, so I could switch between ,1/4 and 2.5mm. Shoot Drew a Email, he can help you out.

I've only been listening a few hours now, on the IE-800, now there's a match made in heaven, great soundstage , tight bass, very detailed. Very nice clarity. Sure wish they were balanced. I may make the leap, to some ciem's. I've been reading tons of reviews. I am kinda pissed about my HD-800's in balanced, just not being loud enough.

Hey rudi,

Thanks for your impressions. I have one purchased DSD album, Counting Crows, August And Everything After. I find this version to have some upper frequency aberrations that reveal themselves on my main system. On the other hand, the free to download files from Oppo's website by David Elias are outstanding sounding ... kind of gives me the same impression as when I first heard an Opus 3 recording on vinyl. :D

David Elias' music is along the way of folk, but I like the 4 tracks that are available. Interestingly, 3 of the 4 tracks were recorded here in my backyard, La Honda, CA. They are pure DSD64 recordings straight from the mic to the DSD converter with no PCM conversion for mastering. I strongly recommend to everyone you check these recordings out even if you're not a folk music fan—they just show how good DSD64 can sound. I can't wait until DSD128 recordings become more available. Here's the link: http://oppodigital.com/hra/dsd-by-davidelias.aspx

By the way, can anybody let me know if Head-Fi is HTML compatible? Apparently it isn't, but my HTML skills are those of a novice, so I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly although I'm pretty sure I am. Links look way more elegant in HTML.
