Can someone confirm that the balanced on/off setting toggles between the 2.5 and 3.5 jacks?  I'm thinking of using the setting as a poor man's pre-out switch where my monitors are connected to one jack, headphones to the other and use the balanced on/off setting to toggle.  Yay, nay?

Hi Solude,

I can confirm that when the balanced output is turned off, there is no output from the 2.5mm jack. The same in the reverse; when the balanced output is turned on, there is no output from the 3.5mm jack. I believe your plan will work exactly as you'd like.

Version 1.11 software installed on my 240.

Maybe it's in their future plans "one only could hope" but I feel they should've made this move like yesterday, forget the pundits about higher res music and being able to hear differences, iTunes is very mature now just put it out and the people who want it will gladly pick it up....I buy a lot of music every month "a lot 😊" more so now than when I was a teenager...yes streaming music is good as I use it as a discovery thing, I'm always on the lookout for good sounding music no matter what it is...I like to own music still and yes I get some kids saying why own it when it's always available? Well I understand this as well as there are a lot of here today gone tomorrow tracks out there commercialism uhgg...but there's still some very good music being made just have to sort through a lot of it to find what appeals to you this is what makes great music there's many different types and genres...

Afaik DSD is much bigger in classical music than anywhere else. Channel classics releases brilliant new classical recordings in DSD format regularly, whereas the more modern music seem to be the same old tired offerings some of which I've bought more than once in ever increasing resolutions, out of sheer desperation. Hope it will improve, but I fortunately listen to a lot of classical.

Maybe to you modern music is boring I guess it depends on what you're listening too being how I'm not into more mainstream bubblegum commercial music...I'm a fan of many genres whether it be classical...Hip Hop "real Hip Hop" Rock...Electronic....Jazz which you forgot to include in the DSD line up ...as a matter of fact I want music the way the artist spent time making it the Master would be best I don't care if it were mastered at 96k 44.1k or 192k I want it to sound the best it can as he or she heard it in the studio mix when it was done and they sat back and smiled 😊 ahh yeah that's it... That's how I want it I want to feel or at least know where they were coming from when it was said and done ....nuff said...I love all music no matter what type....Music is valuable to the soul, it brings emotions good and sad....whether it's Miles playing that note or Yo-Yo Ma having a jam session with fellow musicians...music is to be cherished....

I love many genres and I didn't mean modern music is boring, I said that what's available for download in DSD is very limited outside of classical music and is often the same stuff that has been on offer for ages as 24/96 and 24/196 etc, much of which I bought and love but will not buy again in DSD format.

Just tested this with two different headphones plugged in. Confirmed that tapping the balanced setting switches between the two. Your plan should work fine.

Question for those of you that own the AK240:

Is the AK240 alone enough to take the LCD-3s to its maximum potential, or will a portable amp be required?

Nope, you will need a totl desktop amp (Schiit Ragnarok, Eddie Current 4-45, Auralic Taurus MKII, HeadAmp GS-X MKII, etc.) to take it to max potential.

It is good. But adding an amp is needed for best SQ

A few questions : is there a true sq benefit in driving iems balanced on the AK240? On the 901 the benefit was minimal, even if driving iems balanced allowed to use the full capacity of the balanced card.

If you have 2.5 balanced cables for your iems, you need a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter to use this cable on other DAPs right?

What is the meaning of life?

I've tried both SE and balanced off the AK240 with the same IEMs (K10, TG!334, & Ref1). The problem I had with all 3 cases was that it wasn't the same cable type - i.e. with the K10 & Ref1 I went from stock cable to Wagnus Proton balanced & Whiplash TWAu balanced. To my they made very noticeable differences.

With the TG!334, I went from the Tralucent Sliver/Gold to Wagnus Proton, the improvement wasn't as big. However I don't believe anything conclusive can be made yet 'cos I personally think different IEMs with different crossovers & different designs would each benefit varyingly from balancing. So far though I do feel hybrids and dynamic drivers seem to benefit from balanced more than BA's. With BA's it's more a hit 'n miss rather than an outright "no benefit".

Hey AnakChan! smily_headphones1.gif Have u tried the balanced TH900 on AK240 or any other amp/DAC? Does balance mod will make TH900 sound better in your opinion?

As I'm thinking wether I should mod my TH900 with 4pin XLR connector then use an adaptor to play with the AK240...

No I haven't. I've not dared to snip the connector yet. And if I did, I don't think I'd do it for the AK240 2.5mm TRRS as to me the AK240 is primarily an "outdoor DAP" (I have a desktop rig at home) and I wouldn't use the TH-900 outdoors.

You may wanna ask the folks in the TH-900 thread if it benefits from balancing. The problem is I don't think anyone has been able to compare side-by-side and have only one pair sent off for modding & compared based on memory instead.

Thanks for the reply! Seems that I better hold it p for a while until I tried some other headphones... Like: balanced HD800 with AK240? biggrin.gif
