I've been following the site for a while but I am a new member.
Looking for some recommendations on closed back circumaural headphones. I want them to match well with my "study playlist" which is mostly Madeleine Peyroux, Miles Davis, Dave Brubek, Norah Jones, (vocal jazz), etc. That said, I listed to everything (rock to classical), and I would like them to be solid performers all around. I'm all over the place studying from my laptop with headphones (I'm a grad-student), but I also study at night a lot and I don't want to make a lot of noise, or hear much, so closed back is a must. If this weren't an issue I think I'd just buy some HD650s as I have tried those and they are great.
Right now I use my Etymotic ER4-S (w/ ACS Custom tips) right out of the laptop or with a little amp, though I am considering a JDS Labs C5D or similar (or I may wait for the Schiit mobile solution later this year). I have a home DAC and amp already, but I don't use it much because the Etys don't benefit from it enough to make it worthwhile. I tried some mobile DACs but they were so inferior to my home setup it seemed un-worth it.
Currently very interested in the Mr. Speakers Alpha Dog, though its a tad pricey. Headphones must sound as good, or better than the Etys (like the HD650s did w/ decent amp) or its not worth it to me.
Please help me veteran hi-fiers!
P.S. Please do a meet in South Texas so I can try all your stuff :)
