looking for a DYI DAC kit with optical input and superior sound

I am looking into a new DYI project to assemble a DAC. I had a look around into items like the gamma 1/2 or pupDAC etc.

Has anyone experience with couple of different DYI DACs?

I am looking for the following criteria

- small to medium form factor (does not need to be necessarily portable)

- optical input

- (preferably USB input, if USB should be compatible with Mac OS X)

- kit with good assembly and testing instructions

- excellent sound

S/PDIF (optical or co-ax) DAC kits seem to be on the decline lately.
USB DACs have been gaining more and more in popularity

The Gamma 1/2 has the ability to have S/PDIF as well as USB.
The pupDAC is a USB DAC

I personally have a pupDAC and a chinese DAC that has
S/PDIF optical and co-ax. The chinese DAC is no longer
being offered so there is no point discussing it.

I can say that I would recommend the pupDAC
based on it's reasonable price and good sound quality..

Thanks for your insight. Interesting to read that opticals are in decline. What could be the reason for that?

What about operating system comparability of USB DACs? Can you just plug them into any computer / router?
