Anywhere to try out the Sennheiser HD800? Also, are the ones from China legitimate?

From what I've read, these are perfect for me. I like accuracy (even if it reveals harshness), don't like adulteration and don't like bass. They seem like a natural upgrade from the srh940. But I wish there was a retailer somewhere in SoCal where I could try them out. I don't like returning stuff.

Related question, I see a retailer in China selling them for a big discount. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-new-Sennheiser-HD800-On-Ear-Headphones-/111220331884?pt=US_Headphones&hash=item19e53f956c Do you think these are authentic? and not refurbished?

There is no way I would buy a $1500 headphone from an ebay seller in another country. Let's assume they are real (which I doubt), what about the warranty? How are you going to get support & service?

I like the return policy - as I read this, they first tell you they have to be returned within 14 days, and they have to be "brand new and resalable condition: - which I think actually means you can't actually unseal the box. Then they go on to say they aren't actually under any obligation to replace or refund anything that has actually been delivered. In other words, once you get it, they can just tell you to go pound sand.

Return Policy
If you have received wrong or defective item(s), please ensure that items are returned to us within 14 days in original packaging in brand new and resalable condition. You will be required to contact us for a return authorization form before sending anything back to us. Please note that eGlobaL Digital Cameras is under NO obligation to send replacement/issue refund, for shipments/orders that are signed and delivered to the shipping address specified by the customer. Please note that you will be responsible for the returned shipping cost and it is non-refundable.

Are you willing to take that risk just to save $250? I'm not. I would rather buy a less expensive headphone from a domestic company.

There is a BIG head-fi meet at the South Coast Plaza Westin in March. I would bet there will be an HD800 there - probably at least 4 or 5 examples.

Yes that's a good point.

Just tried them out at a very nice LA establishment. I'm so glad I didn't buy them as they're not that much better than the SRH940s. They're clearly excellent and they have more mid and bass detail, but the SRH940s might have very slightly more treble detail and the two are not far apart.

It is a sad fact that the incremental improvements gained for the extra money you spend goes way down the more you spend. A $100 headphone might easily be more than 2X better than a $50 headphone - but a $5000 headphone is NOT 2X better than a $2500 headphone - in fact, some might say the $2500 headphone is *better*. wink.gif
