This is my first few days on the thread and i've noticed this as a trend. First the Pioneer "HD650 killer", and now I'm hearing a lot about the HE-300. I'm not sure if this is one of those hype things or if its a legitimate observation. I just want to get the HD650 so I have some sort of reference point. The best headphones I've owned so far are the Focal Spirit Ones, I liked them but they weren't nearly as good as I would have hoped. I'm hoping the HD650 can give me an idea of what good sounds like.

Comparing the headphone to the HD650 is not the same thing as saying it sounds like the HD650. What he said was:

The signature is closer to the HD650 than the AKG or the Beyer

I'd been meaning to ask why HD650. Your answer makes good sense. I should mention, though, that you might consider HD600 instead. They're both very good. HD650 has more bass and HD600 is more neutral (and more comfortable). It's a matter of preference.

I also prefer HD600 to HD650 :)

I'm glad my reasoning makes sense to someone other than myself! I come from a background of Car Audio SQL, so ever since then everything seems to be a tad lacking in the bass department (especially sub bass). Not only that, The HD600 doesn't seem to go for much cheaper than the HD650 locally. Is there any good reason for this? I've seen plenty of cases where its actually consistently put up for more than I see the HD650's going for. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places (craigslist)

Thanks again guys for all of the help in advance.

So you might prefer HD650 for the bass. Regarding the price similarity, HD600 tends to be cheaper on the FS board. If HD650 is cheaper on craigslist, the reason would be excess supply. I suspect that more first-time buyers want HD650 thinking it must be better because it has a higher model number. Later, they decide that sound isn't so important to them and sell.

Edit: In the open sales on FS within the past month, I see three HD600s ($270, 280, 290) and two HD650s ($310, 320).
