-Before choosing an amp, make sure it have the required specs to drive a particular headphone (80 ohm, 250 ohm, 600 ohm and such)

-There are different designs such as Solid state and tubes, each have their own advantages and cons.

Couple of points to consider.

Do you need a DAC?

How much portability do you need?

Is your wall outlet 110 or 220VAC?

Do you need balanced or single ended input/output?

What impedance headphones are you planning on using?  Are they generally highly sensitive or conversely are they power hungry?  The amp will need to have proper gain and attenuation for the impedance/sensitivity of the headphone and line level output you intend to feed it with.

for starters....

Good points Kramer, adding a sticky on "What to consider before buying a headphone amp" would be nice.
