I'm in the market for a new pair of headphones. They've got to be closed (and sealed. No sound leakage allowed), circumaural, and they need to sound great straight out of a mobile phone and laptop.
I have tried a number, and some sounded pretty good while not really being what I'm looking for either comfort-wise or sound-wise.
Sennheiser Momentum: Beautiful-looking, isolated fine for me, sounded about like what I'm looking for but not 100%. Comfort killed them for me, as they aren't really circumaural and hurt my ears. There's also something about the sound I didn't like, I never could put my finger on it, but everything just kinda meshed together and I never felt like instruments were separated as they should be.
Harman/Kardon CL: I had these at the same time I had the Momentum, and much preferred the sound of the CL. I felt like the midrange was nicely separated and smoother and more detailed, and the bass was just awesome in my opinion. I actually kept these instead of the Momentum, even though they hurt my ears more. In the end I just couldn't keep them on my head, but if there's an around-ear model with a similar sound signature (H/K BT??) I'd be all over them.
Bang & Olufsen H6: Most comfortable, most neutral-sounding headphones I've ever listened to. So clean-sounding. In the end, turns out I want a little bit of bass emphasis to make things exciting and these just didn't have that.
B&W P7: Really didn't care for these at all. Too much bass that it makes other things sound unnatural (acoustics guitars in particular), not particularly comfortable for me with their stiff leather pads, and nothing else about the sound really stood out.
Denon AH-D1100: Comfy, and I loved everything about the sound except the bass. It intruded into the mids and made things seem muddy and ugly. If I can get that sound signature without all that bass, I'd be happy.
I'm considering the H/K BT and Denon AH-D600. Any thoughts on either? I was thinking about some of the older models (AH-D5000), but sounds like they don't isolate very well and that's a deal-breaker. Looking at the FR graphs for the 600 on headroom, it almost looks like the 1100 but with controlled bass, and that's very appealing to me.
Likewise, if the BT sounds anything like the CL then I'd be in love with them too, if I can get over the looks.
