HE-400 and Mad Dog. whats next?

I just got the Mad Dog headphones a few weeks ago and going from the HE-400 to the Mad Dogs made me realize that i really wish the HE-400 had better mids.

What i would like to know is if there is a headphone that retains the detail and separation of the HE-400 while still having the smooth mids of the Mad Dog.

would that be the HE-500 or the LCD-2?

or is there a cheaper option?

Thanks.

It's a good question. My first thought is maybe to wait till the new Hifimans come out later this year. I'm curious what others think of.

You might try looking for a mod for either model that accomplishes what you want. Some of the dynamic models used to be more mid-centric but as they tend to be older, they can be a little grainy.

I would probably say the Audeze - but I didn't have a long listen with them, and I was so busy being absolutely, completely astonished by them that I'm afraid I didn't analyze them that closely. biggrin.gif

have you tried the velour pads? They bring out the upper mids noticeably, but it will still have a dark signature. But yes, the he-500 probably has the sound signature you're looking for.

Yes i am using the velour, but the mids of HE-400 are still nowhere near the Mad Dog.

yes. The mad dogs are sometimes described as a baby lcd-2 since they reportedly have a similar sound signature (note: i havent heard the mad dogs. i've only read reviews). And lcd2 has one of the most highly praised mids here in head-fi (even better than the hd650), so that goes without saying that the mad dog's mids are good.

That's probably the best idea right now.
