The Xiaomi Pistons Thread - Page 57

I just got a message from Zhengnan store from Amazon.  There was some mistake due to set price which expired on 3/31, so they adjusted the price back to $24.90 and if anybody is interested in IF edition, just need to contact them with a request - the price will be the same.

I also noticed, more fakes popped up under the same listing on Amazon (some selling for $19, others for $20.90).  Funny that Zhengnan is the one who created this amazon listing, so they added a comment in the product description about "fake" prices lol!!

Amazon US (Zhengnan's store - delivered 12 days).  Outside of US, I would certainly trust Penonaudio.

For those who already have 2.1 version, the only real difference is a bonus drawstring pouch (btw, good quality).  Plus a lighter color shade.  The sound quality and in-line remote functionality are the same.

I have received the Xiaomi Piston and dam, if this thing appears at the best buy / target, these will put earphones / headphones from other companies's out of business! If Joker got these reviewed, he'd rate 12/10! So far, without burn-in yet, I am impressed, although the treble still slightly harsh but not overboard like that XBA-30 nor bright as the JVC's FXC51. Even though it does not insert deeply but shallowly, it sounds really full! Any people who hates deep insertion will love these.  Dam. All I can do is shook my head and bow down with respect for its awesomeness.

How does it compare with your XBA-30?

It's still my first impression of Xiaomi's Piston; right now, I am burning it with Dragon Force songs on loops. But anyway, Piston beats XBA-30 in every departments; the bass, mid, treble, clarity, and fit. Bass is what I expect from dynamic; big and punchy on low ends but never sounded so bloated. The XBA-30, of courses, loses in the bass quantity and quality; it sounds a bit boomy but lack of the texture that I would expect from a BA. The XBA-30 bass and MID are overshadowed by that harsh and peaky treble! While the Piston mid is clear but not too forward like FXT90, the mid of XBA-30 sounds softer but became recessed due to, again, that harsh treble. The sound depends on the fit while the fit is already terrible due to its design, which is vertical, bulkiest, and having nozzle pointing upward.

Again, the main problem of XBA-30 is that !%^@!^ peaky treble that won't go away when I stuff with foams or T-comply tips, or even when I lower the volume to the lowest, the peaky treble is still there. I wish its tweeters were malfunctioning! The emphasized peak treble that produces “tizzing” sound makes it sounding harsh, fatiguing, and unrefined. Worse, the high overshadows all the frequencies...making it difficult to catch the sound and details from guitar, drums, even vocal. XBA-30 will ruin most acoustic guitar songs, trumpets, and some songs that repetitively highlight cymbals and hi-hats. Most of the time I get headache and I often pause the songs or skip ‘em immediately…. I couldn’t imagine the taste of metallic tinge from XBA-3,its predecessor, would like and to know that Sony had fixed the problem, the treble is still offending.

Unburned, the piston still can present the instruments clearer than that XBA-30 while avoiding the "tizzing" noise from murdering one's ears, .....but still from out the box, the piston's treble is slightly unrefined so I am burning 'em and see the outcomes. However In XBA-30's case, the clarity is actually presented in the wrong way since details from tizzing sound are emphasized instead of the instruments. I actually enjoy bright sound but the XBA-30’s treble is just vile.  Piston that costs $30 including the shipping totally clobbers and put XBA-30 to shame....and that even $100 costlier! I'd be pissed if I paid full retail price for this piece of dookie,

What would it take to get Joker to review these?  I know he's done some mini-reviews of IEMs lately, but in terms of that big ranking list, I'd love to see where Pistons would fall; both 2.0 and 2.1.

Wow...that'd be a dream. ljokerl reviewing these glorious little babies...

I'd send him a pair if I could, with a fake letter making it look like it was a review model sent to him from Xiaomi themselves. Nah, too elaborate.

Might as well just send him the pair with a note "FOR REVIEW" on it. Much better that way.

Hi All,

This is my first post.  I bought 2 pairs of these:

March 4: Ibuygou

March 5: mistertao

The MisterTao ones arrived 1 day before the Ibuygou.  The Ibuygou are 2.0, while the MisterTao are 2.1.  If I were to order again, I would go with MisterTao, since it arrives faster and includes tracking number, and is the newer version.

I have not compared the sound between the two, my gf uses the 2.1, I use the 2.0.

Gf's thoughts: She uses the stock tips, and loves them overall. It's the most "wow" factor she's had with earbuds (she has used Head Direct RE2 years back, then Etymotic HF5 recently).  The bass is better than anything she has heard.  This may be skewed since she has been using dollar store headphones the last few weeks since the HF5s were lost.

My thoughts: Great for the price, bass response is impressive.  These are not better than the Head Direct RE0s that I had before they broke, except for the bass.  Treble can be extended a little more.  I use the double flange tips from the RE0's (I will switch to triple flange as soon as I find them).

I will do a back to back sound test comparing both of them when I have the chance.  Overall, very impressed by the sound and the overall quality of the product for the price!

OK, here is a little update for US buyers interested to get their hands on IF version of Pistons 2.1.  As a disclaimer, I'm NOT associated with Zhengnan's store on Amazon or work for them lol!!!  I did receive IF version from them as a review unit I shared with you, so now the store sends me updates which I choose to share with you on Head-fi.

They have a limited number of IF units, in general Xiaomi manufactured it in limited numbers.  So, once they sold out it will not be re-stocked.  I have been told because the store is overwhelmed with requests for IF version, to make sure there is no confusion between sending regular and IF version they created a new listing on Amazon (US) for IF version: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JF5HF5Y - this is the same version I received and reviewed, and the price is the same $24.90 as the original version.  The original version is still available on Amazon (US) at www.amazon.com/Original-Xiaomi-Earphone-Headphone-Smartphone/dp/B00HUNUOJW/ but there are other sellers who added their fake versions.  So, I recommend clicking on See All Buying Options to select Zhengnan store, otherwise you don't know what you are getting.

Again, I'm just posting this as a favor because of all the questions and confusions of where to buy and which one is real.  It's very sad that these are dirt cheap headphones to begin with, and there are fake versions overflowing the market.

Also, for those who are still skeptical thinking Pistons 2.1 hyped up, they are not.  I would never tell you they sound better than $500 W40 or $400 UE900 or $360 ATH-IM03.  But as a single dynamic driver with fully integrated android in-line control (volume +/- working!) they sound amazing for $25 and much better than some of the $100-$150 v-shaped/fun headphones I tested in the past.

Too bad penonaudio is unable to accept pre-sale orders. Their product page for the 2.1 penonaudio.com/Earphones/In-ear-earphone/Xiaomi-Piston-IF-Commemorative-Edition will not allow me to continue with checkout. I didn't hear back from penonaudio regarding the pre-sale, so I moved on to another seller :P

I bought mine from twister6's amazon page

I actually just got G800 headphone (by bidenuo), and those came with hybrid tips that look like these (with red core):

So, I'm using it now on Pistons and it sounds AMAZING!!!  You can get these eartips on ebay for about $8-$9.

I couldn't find these kinds of tips at ebay; did you buy a bidenuo set just to get the eartips?

Search under "sony hybrid eartips": http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xsony+hybrid+eartips&_nkw=sony+hybrid+eartips&_sacat=0&_from=R40

here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Pairs-Hybrid-Replacement-Set-Eartips-Earbuds-for-Sony-XBA-MDR-DR-Series-JVC-/221401999941?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338c966a45 and here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Pairs-Hybrid-Replacement-Set-Eartips-Earbuds-for-Sony-XBA-MDR-Monster-AKG-/221384787709?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338b8fc6fd

I also placed an order and waiting for these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Pairs-Silicone-Hybrid-Replacement-Earbuds-Eartips-for-Sony-XBA-MDR-DR-Series-/201052712941?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2ecfacefed - will let you know once I get it if they are any good.

Regarding bidenuo headphones, that was partially why I got it lol!!!  I liked the tips and that little case, and figured the headphones if they are any good - will be a bonus.  Headphones are not that great because of the rough diamond cut surface which can scratch inside of your ear.  To be honest, it's not worth to order those just for tips.  You can get by with $0.99 hybrid tips :)

thanks twister, I've ordered the hybrid tips. Some note that although Piston's sound is very exciting ( bass hits hard, clear midrange, crisp treble without fatiguing nor peaky treble), the sub-bass extension and quantity still cannot reach to the MH1/MH1C's level. No one can defeat the sub-bass king MH1/MH1C, not even Philips SHE3590. Also, The isolation is not as great because of the shallow fit; The short nozzle and large diameter of the housing prevent deep insertion. But least the sound is independent to the fit :)

But aren't the Sony hybrid tips too small for the Pistons? Do they fit?
