Yes, I did compare. The Pistons is bassier and has more treble energy than IM50s. IM50 is midcentric and vocals are the strongest point of this IEM while Pistons mids are recessed. Pistons have more bass especially subbass.

That's debatable.

I have both a modded and non-modded Piston, both gives up something significant.

I like the rolled off treble with the non-modded Piston, but the downside the bass bleeds into the mids way too much.

The modded Piston significantly brings down the bass bloat, but adds way too much sibilance to the treble.

Neither made the somwhat V-shaped signature go away regardless, but I'm pretty sure this was Xiaomi's aim in the first place.

So in the end, I've decided that the Pistons aren't my cup of tea as much as I want to love them. No denying the fact that at $25, there aren't that many IEMs that can achieve what the Pistons do but too bad, it's just how it is.

Did you try different tips on your Pistons? With stock tips, I agree with you that it can be sibilant at times.

Yup.

Had a Sony hybrid on it which barely fit, didn't work out.

Made some custom foam tips, improved a little bit on the bloat but still too much for me.

Any recommendations for other tips?

Sony hybrids almost always work for me. When those won't, my next go-to tip is the meelectronics double flanges. That is of course if the Rings on them aren't too big for the hozzle.

Narrow tips aren't good for the pistons, they put one or two veils on the already rolled off treble so the sony hybrids aren't working very good imo. You need some wide bore tips like some generic sennheiser.

Which one do you prefer? Is it worthy to upgrade from piston to xiaomi?

Thanks.

From Pistons to Xiaomi? XD
That's a little funny, but you might want to restate that. I think the IM50s would be a good complement to the Pistons, considering they have a mid-centric signature.

I guess you mean upgrade from Pistons to IM50. It all depends on which sound signature you are after. Pistons are warm. Despite its bassheavy sound, it is quite detailed and its soundstage is pretty wide. IM50 is midcentric and detailed but the treble is taking backseat after mid and bass. I like IM50 more. It is my favorite IEM and made me love the vocals.:D

If you listen to some edm, pop and techno/trance than Pistons is better. That is not to say IM50 is bad at these genres but with its bassy sound Pistons fits the bill better.;)

My first impressions made electronic music boring. Sure there was bass, but the recessed mid-range sucks the life and a fair amount of energy out of any song with vocals.

Luckily the right combination of tips and gear helps to breathe new life into them. It's still hard to adjust to such a recessed mid-range. My brain refuses to accept it as anything but unnatural. Since the mods don't sound like they affect the mids, I have very little reason to go that direction just yet.

Going to let a lab partner try them and might just donate them as an intro to Head-Fi.

Before letting them go, you may want to mode them. Yeah, it's not as mid-centric as IM50s but it is not as recessed as Steelseries Flux in ears after modding. Believe me! Flux are worser than Pistons in the whole frequency responce.

The foam removal mode also affected the mids such as bringing them a little forward but not to the levels of Ety's or IM50's. I had the same feelings and was quite dissapointed with the sound before I decided to mode them. Once I moded them, there was no going back to the orginals.

I've never heard them. Maybe better I didn't?

I'm going to agree with you here, and post my review in a separate thread
