I'm currently on the look for a pair of full open-back headphones, preferrably Sennheiser as I'm familiar with them. I currently have the HD380 Pros and have done for a couple of months now. While I love the sound they produce, the lack of hearing things on the outside is starting to become a problem and sometimes the bass is a bit too much.
The HD598s look really good, but their £150 price tag is pushing my budget a bit too much while the HD558s at £122 don't (these prices are from Amazon UK at the time of typing this).
Currently, I use an Onkyo C-7030 CD player which the line-out is fed into a Rolls MX42 passive mixer (to mix the output from my PC while playing games which comes from an M-Audio Audiophile 2496) and then a Little Dot I+ with Brimar 6064 T valves and a LM4562 opamp. The Brimar 6064 Ts really make reverb and echo shine in the music I listen to.
The music I primarily listen to is electronic, psychedelic, downtempo and progressive with a mix of others such as goa trance and dub - stuff with strong reverb and echo. Arists such as Aes Dana, Solar Fields, Shpongle, Globular, Ott, E-Mantra, Asura, etc.
A punchy bass is something I'm keen to look at but soundstage is also another - the Brimar valves already bring the soundstage out on the HD380 Pros but I've been told open-back headphones can improve this even further.
Would anyone be able to recommend either the HD558s or 598s for the music I listen to and is the price difference really worth it, or are these headphones both not good for what I listen to?
