Your advice is highly appreciated: How to improve my current set-up?

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Hi guys,

it would be awesome, if you could give my your advice.

I’m currently using the following set-up and wonder what can be changed to improve it -- by minimizing the potential investment costs:

Spotify streaming (high quality: 320 kbps)

Iphone 4

Fiio L9 (skipping the internal amp, but using the DAC of the iphone 4)

Epiphany Acoustics EHP-O2 Amp

AKG K-701 headphone

Thank you very much!

Are you looking for a different sound signature?

I really love the sound of the AKG K-701. It's analytical characteristic and soundstage is my pleasure.

Listening to music and hearing all the different instruments and details is my thing.

Is there any specific aspect of the sound you are hearing that you want to improve? It's going to be hard to give you suggestions if we don't know what you want to fix.

You have a pretty good setup so far. The only possible improvements I can see are:

Use lossless files instead of Spotify (might not make any difference)
Get a DAC that bypasses the iPhone's internal DAC (also might not make any difference)

As you can see, there is not much room for improvement unless you have a specific goal in mind.

I experienced significant quality increases from the equipment I started with (beats + iphone) to my current set-up:

Remarkable milestones on my way:

Spotify (on pc) --> Optical out --> AstroMixamp (stereo mode) --> Sennheiser HD598

The first time I realized what I've missed. Details, stage...

Spotify (on iphone) --> fiio L9 --> fiio e11 --> Sennheiser HD598

Sounded better, louder and better eq'ed

Spotify (on iphone) --> fiio L9 --> fiio e11 --> AKG K701

I was overwhelmed by my new headphone. This was by lightyears the best sound I've ever heard. I felt like being the producer and listening to the music in a studio. But the e11 couldn't drive the K701 to the velocity I desired. A new amp was needed.

Spotify (on iphone) --> fiio L9 --> Epiphany Acoustics EHP-O2 Amp --> AKG K701

I was literally crying when I was listening the first time to my new set-up and listened for hours and hours to music.

==============================

I now wonder, if for example a new DAC can make such a difference like I experienced with headphones and amps?

In case Spotify with it's 320 kbps is the weakest link in the chain, than I reached my final set-up, because I don't have such a comprehensive CD collection.

I would bet that having PC->USB DAC->O2->K702 would sound essentially the same as your iphone->L9->O2->K702. IMHO, YMMV... smily_headphones1.gif
