DAC and Amp solution for Macbook Pro and iPhone 5

Thread Starter

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting an Amp and DAC or combo for use with my Macbook Pro and iPhone 5.

I was looking at the iBasso D-Zero but these don't seem to be readily available in the UK.

I also looked at the FiiO E17, E12 and E09k but I don't know whether these will fulfill my wants.

My current phones are: Philips Fidelio X1, Sennheiser HD 380 Pro's and B&W C5's.

I'll be using the Dac/Amp with the Sennheisers with my iphone, and the Philips through my Macbook and would like the solution to be relatively portable as I occasionally take long train journeys.

In the relatively near future I hope to expand my collection, into some closed cans with a higher impedance so I would need the power for 600 ohm cans (just to be on the safe side)

Max budget is circa £140 for both, but I have no issue with buying second hand.

What is going to get me the best value for money?

Thanks guys, I appreciate any help that you can give me!

I've owned the E17 and now using the E12, thus I could only give you my opinions on these two.

The E17 is smaller and lighter than the E12, but that's pretty much the only pros. I sold my E17 because there were noticeable distortions when being paired up with my MacBook Pro.

The E12 is larger and are really hard to fit into tight jeans along with a phone. They however are much better and could even power my Sennheiser HD800, albeit loss in quality.

IMHO, the E12 is the best bang for the buck. They are able to pretty much drive all current headphones (although I don't recommend driving Stax or other high-ends).
