Looking for an upgrade for HD555. Am I looking in the right direction?

Thread Starter

So I've been browsing through these forums looking for recommendations (thanks for all the info!), and am finally arriving at some suggestions for myself.

The basic premise is this: I have the Sennheiser HD555s, which have served me very well for maybe 5(?) years. But now I think I want something with more bass, and better overall sound wouldn't obviously hurt either. I mostly use the headphones for music, but also for gaming when I don't want to annoy the neighbors. They are always plugged in to my Xonar D1 -soundcard though.

Currently I'm looking at mostly beyerdynamic -made headphones, don't really know why, but they seem to have both good reviews and look very comfortable (and quite aesthetic too, although that is much less important). On my current list are DT990, DT990pro, T50, or maybe even T90 (but these would be quite the stretch on the budget). I also figured I'd probably need an amp, and http://epiphany-acoustics.co.uk/products-page/headphone-amplifiers/ehp-o2-portable-headphone-amplifier/ is what I'm considering at the moment.

So finally the question - would these headphones be suitable for my purposes (or are there other, better candidates), and would the amp be ok for the 600ohm versions?

The DT990 will quench your thirst for more bass than your current HD555 for sure. You will DEFINITELY need an amp if you buy the 600 ohm version. I'm not sure if you will or not for the 250 ohm, I don't know what kind of power the Xonar has.

Go for the DT990, DT880, or DT770. They all share the same drivers, but are open, semi-open, or closed headphones. The DT770 has an 80 ohm version that the other two don't, and offers more bass than the others and would be easier to drive.

I've owned the DT880 250 ohm and DT770 80 ohm and actually have a DT770 600 ohm Premium arriving in the mail today :)
