Stepping up to Hi-End DAP -- what to get?

Hi guys/gals,

Let me give you brief history first. I started my portable journey from Sansa Clip and Phonak Audeo. I switched from Clip to Fuze v2 (mostly because of the form-factor) and used Rockbox on it also with Phonaks till they worked. After Phonaks I tried Atria G5 and did not like them at all. Westone UM3X became my next and so far last IEM, which I use till now. I like them much more than both Phonaks and Atria. After Fuze I switched to Cowon iAudio 10 and was relatively happy with Cowon sound. I used all the time Hip-Hop EQ, which brings a lot of bass and mids forward. Cowon died two years later, now I am back to Fuze and, honestly, can not stand it sound after Cowon anymore.

I am considering to step up to the entry level of Hi-End DAPs and the question now is -- which one to get. I figured that I care more for bass and mids quality and quantity rather than high frequencies, but still want to hear nice highs (is this what people call "dark sound"?). On the other hand, I do not like "bloated" bass and I think that is why Atria did not work for me. I like how UM3X reproduce bass, I read some people call it "controlled". I also like the fact that regardless of volume level UM3X are never harsh or ears. As far as music goes, I listen to variety of rock (hard, progressive, sympho-black, soft, gothic, art, trip, etc, etc), electronic (Tangerine Dream, Klauz Schulze, etc), ambient and a bit of classic. I read reviews mostly about Fiio X3, IBasso DX50, but I am not sure if any of those two would work for me. Does anyone, especially who has or had UM3X have any inputs regarding DAP alone or perhaps DAP together with IEMs other that UM3X? Did I give enough info?

Thanks!

The DX50 is excellent for the money. I think it is comparable to the AK120 or better. AK100 does have a tiny bit blacker background but I value DX50's more transparent sound.

Fiio was ok but then the UI was terrible.
