Looking for Entry - Mid level over-ear headphones.

Thread Starter

Hello everyone, I'm new here and looking to replace some headphones that recently bit the dust.

The Story: I recently broke a 13ish year old set of Bose OE headphones, they were a gift and I'm looking to replace them with something new.

The Budget: I would like to spend 150, but flexible up to 175.

The things will use them for:  I enjoy a wide range of music, but rock, metal, and strong female vocalist (Adele, Florence and the Machine) usually are at the top of the playlist. I will also used them, as a large chunk, general computer listening.

Bells and whistles: I would like to have a detachable cable that I could eventually get a boom mic for since I work from home and often have skype or hangout calls.

Some headphones I've looked at:

V-Moda LP2

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro

And I have also noticed the new ath-m50x's will have detachable cables, which I would think they might have a mic option that would work with them. I don't know enough to confirm that but it would be awesome if someone could confirm it.

If you have any other questions that I didn't answer here ask away and I look forward to everyone's help!

I just wrote this about SRH840: http://www.head-fi.org/t/702804/asking-for-help-in-search-of-portable-headphones#post_10222203. Most of it applies to your question.

Shure used a proprietary locking mechanism on their detachable cable, but I'm pretty sure you can mod it or reterminate another to fit the jack. I have seen SRH840 on the FS board every three weeks, so you should be able to buy it for $130-175 depending on the condition, &c.
