Best headphones for watching movies/playing single player games

Thread Starter

I'm looking for headphones that would be best for single player gaming/movies and music (rap/r&b/electronic/rock). I hardly ever play competitive games, and since most gaming headphone recommendations seem to be geared towards competitive gaming, I figured I'd ask for something a little different.

I've read through the huge gaming headphone thread, along with stuff on a couple other sites and I'm pretty overwhelmed by the options out there, and still really have no clue where to even begin in terms of making a choice, so I'll try to explain what I'm looking for the best I can. I'm brand new to the world of quality headphones, so bear with me!

I'm basically looking for a headset that really immerses you the experience when you watching a movie or playing a singe player game. A full rich sound with quality bass (not head pounding over the top bass). I know a home theater sound in headphones is unrealistic,  but I guess that's the best way I can describe the type of sound I'm going for. I know I'm repeating myself, but immersion in the movie/game I'm playing are the key aspects for what I'm looking for in terms of sound. I hope that makes sense since I'm not sure how to describe the sound I'm looking for in more specific terms like soundstage/highs/mids etc.

Also, comfort is a big thing too. I want to be able to wear the headphones for several hours without issue.

Thanks to anybody who chimes in with any recommendations. Once again, I'm new to all of this, so please go easy on me if I'm not asking the right questions or not doing a great job of describing what I'm looking for!

Edit: Oh yes, in terms of price, right now I'm looking to spend $300 or less, but I can go a bit higher if needed for the perfect pair of headphones.

Also, most of my single player gaming/movie watching will be on a laptop without an optical out.

Big recommendation for a good pair of Grado's, pretty much all of them work very well, even if you dont have an amp (though it definitely improves the sound) and they sound great even without an equalizer due to their tuning :)

The only disadvantage of the Grado's is that for some they are not considered particularly comfortable, but I have not experienced any discomfort from mine, may be a personal preference thing

Console or PC gaming? Do you have surround sound support?
