Closed Back Headphones and Amp Recommendations?

Thread Starter

I currently have Sennheiser HD 518's. They are great for a lot of music and games. But it would be nice to have some closed headphones for edm, hip hop and music with crazy basslines(rhcp comes to mind). Right now all i have for a amp is a xonar dg. I have been eying up the beyerdynamic dt 770 pros (250 ohm version). I am planing on upgrading my dac/amp setup in the future, but i dont have the funds for all three right now. I can get the 250 ohm version from amazon for $175 or the 80 ohm version for $229 from guitar center. I was thinking i should save the $50 and invest that into a better amp.

My ears are on the bigger side so something like the m50's wouldnt work.

My budget is $180 in total with shipping and tax.

Questions:

Are there better headphone for what im looking for?(maybe even less expensive?)

Would a magni drive the 250 ohm version of the dt 770 pros?

Since you already have some hd518s, check out the FS/T forum here for cheaper dt770s and cheap dacs, like fiio e7 or e17. Remember to check the person's feedback thoroughly though, since you probably have to pay first.

If not, then get the 80 ohms version that should work fine on your xonar xg, or get the 250 ohms version and a fiio e7 or e17 later. A jds labs o2 amp will work great as a plug-in amp as well.
