I am interested in Nordost Heimdall as well. I use Siltech, do not find the HD800 bright at all and certainly not from Hugo

Any DAP is, other than for displaying the list of songs and controlling "play" commands, is just a USB stick. A DAP at $1500-2400 otherwise appears to be a waste of money.

Doubling up with a second-rate DAC (as opposed to the Hugo's first rate DAC) it is hardly a best buy. The HTC1-M8 and perhaps others too in this class, can provide 160G of SSD (32 on board, 128G card); the developer's edition of this mobile phone offers 192G, exceeding the capacity of the iPod Classic. I just bought another 32G micro XD for $30 at Radio Shack, giving me 64G total, all I need for photography and music storage, so far about 600 tunes in CD rez, and I am barely touching half of capacity.

Other advantages to this mobile phone, one has a smart phone hanging out with a DAP - Dumb A**ed Player.

It's slim, beautiful, very well made with the latest chips, but unfortunately it doesn't dispense cappuccino or pick up girls. OK, the last is possible.

I agree wholeheartedly, but I would - I've been using USB audio from my Android for about two years now and for my use makes much more sense than getting a DAP. Granted my portable DAC/amps have not been in the same league as the Hugo of course, which of course now has me mulling over the Hugo as an option. The only caveat is that it *must* be able to be my desktop DAC too, and it's probably going up against the Master 7 there, and from what I'm reading the M7 is probably the better pairing for my HE-6 (the only headphone pairing I care about, and probably my only desktop headphone soon as I just never want to listen to my HD800 when I could be listening to the 6).

FWIW I'm using a 256gb SD card with my Note 3 via an SD-microSD adapter (and requisite case mod), so suffice to say I'm happy enough with my storage situation as far as my portable source goes.

I'm loving the Siltech Duchess Crown with the HD800s and don't find it "bright" with all the amp pairings I've heard. Also wanted to try the Heimdall 2 but seems it's sold out locally, dealer said new stock should be arriving next week. I'll be picking up a pair for my LCDs and possibly try on the Abyss as well.

Hello people,

I'm using the Hugo with an iPhone 5 and transport via the CCK - what USB cable are you using? (A to micro B cable).

Is it a generic one? An Audiophile one? Does it even impact the sound as it's all digital?

Thanks!

Sigh.... So many nice cables for HD800 on the market but I only heard Cardas Clear...

You have two excellent products that aren't quite as excellent when used together, at least without another excellent product in between them. :-)
It goes to show how important system matching is. I would recommend selling neither and getting a decent amp, but I don't know how you use them so that might not be practical.

A decent amp elevates the HD800 above 'hi-fi', 'analytical', 'sterile' or similar comments and makes them sound natural and effortless. I don't find them any less detailed or transparent that way, because although they lose the focus on the upper midrange and treble - 'obvious' detail - they illuminate the whole frequency range equally and allow me to explore my music in a much more balanced way. When I'm not just sitting back and enjoying the music that is.

Yep, I went for the Cardas Clear Light and had to buy blind as there's no way to test these. I'm very happy with it, but I don't know what I'm missing! If indeed I'm missing anything. What did you think of the Clear?

They can carry RF noise from the computer or pick it up if poorly made, but Rob Watts said essentially that he worked a lot on dealing with RF interference, so possibly not. I haven't tried comparing except with my AK240 so far, where the difference was pretty small.

What's your opinion of HD800 + Hugo combo? smily_headphones1.gif

How did you get AQ adapter to work consistently? Mine would lose connection at slightest movement. Also I hate the idea of using any adapters as kind of feel it would be weakest link.

The clear is a bit better than the clear light IMO. It improves the transparency, mid and bass of the HD800, and overall makes the 800 became a bit "emotional". I feel that it does sacrificed a little bit soundstage in my ear and I'm not quite sure about that. Even so, the overall improvement definitely worth the little soundstage lose. smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks for the feedback. Once I've got my amp sorted and sold all my redundant kit I'll take another look at cabling. I have the horrible feeling I'll want to replace my interconnects too...

I wish it was the perfect combo, I really do, as it would save me a crap-ton of money. It doesn't quite do it for me though so I'm going to need that amp.

The cool thing about Hugo is that it will even make the Sony CD900ST i bought from Tokyo sounds pleasing for mild and laid back music. This pair i just bought with the last remaining yen i had during the holidays last year. For people who take Hugo to audition c/iem or cans, I feel sorry for your wallets. LoL
