I don't expect the amp section of the hugo to be TOTL, but I am interested to know how well seasoned headphone-amp-users feel it performs, relatively-speaking.

While as DAC is excellet, the amp is "just" good and I liked how LCD-X, LCD-3 and HD800 sounded with it, but it cannot compete with the full sized ones like Burson Soloist or Decware Taboo MK3.

Thanks

OK, let me ask a slightly different question:

How does it compare to dedicated portable amps?

@dan.gheorghe

thanks a lot for the review. really enjoy reading it, so succinct to the points. I am also interested to know if adding a portable amp will yield any benefit... thanks

great review... you may want to change 'hot' to 'how'...

The amp section is good as well and I enjoyed it even with LCD-X, LCD-3 and HD800.

I am not sure if you would need another one with this. For portable headphones it might suffice. You could probably find a better, more powerful amp if needed, but I haven't tested a lot of those to give you an exact answer.

They're all picky headphones with regard to amping and I can see how the Soloist and the Taboo with all their power on tap do a better job there, but I'm hoping the Hugo as a standalone device will be more than sufficient for the relatively easy-to-drive TH-900.

Hugo's DAC sounds really special.

How does the Hugo compare to that of the Antelope Audio Zodiac Platinum, Schitt audio Gungnir, Centrance M8 and Sound Devices USB PRe. Do you think the Dac in the hugo would be alot better then the dac in the Astell & Kern AK240?  If listening to mostly CD (Wave files 44.1 K) along with a JH audio Roxianne & JH-13, Grado RS-1, Grado PS-1000, Audez LCD-X, Audez LCD-3, Sennheiser HD-700 & 800, will this unit give more detail and richness of the vocals and mid frequencies without sounding to un-natural.

I listen to alot of classical music along with gospel and choral choirs. The music consist of everything from the Crystal Cathedral choir, Aretha Franklin, Morman Tabernacle Choir, Patti Labelle, Dolly Parton, Beyonce, etc. Do you think the Astell & Kern pared with the Chord Hugo would do the trick in getting all the nuances and detail?

As I said in the review, Hugo could be compared to full sized units, going in my top of my recommendations list.

I listened to a lot of classical music with Hugo, and I must say it is more than wonderful with it and it shows excellent dynamics & microdynamics, details and microdetails.

For choral music it is wonderful as well, as the vocals are very clean, transparent and have a very nice timbre.

I didn't hear the Astell & Kern, but you may not need it any longer, but you have to decide that for yourself.

No, That's why I'm asking your opinion. What do you think is okay without going over kill. I want detail in the vocals that one could almost hear the pitch of the sound of air he or she is taking. How much breath they are using rather then just hearing the breath, determine if the pianist or vocalist got off a little bit but was skilled enough to get back on track and go along with the music.

For that you would need a very good and detailed headphone as well, like HD800 or even LCD-X. If you pair those headphones with a good amplifier like burson soloist and Hugo, I think you will get what you want.

Thanks but what do you think of the Chord Hugo vs the Antelope Audio Zodiac Platinum DAC. Do you think you would here anymore off your CD's on the Anteleope Audio Zodiac Platinum vs the Hugo? The only reason I was thinking about the Astell& Kern AK240 was because of its file storage and so I can have a good portable rig to go wherever I want, What are your thoughts of the Sennheiser HD-800 vs LCD-X. Which do you think gives best detail while also giving you life to your music ( Basically making you have a "Wow" moment from hearing the detail but also a "Super WOW" moment from feeling the music).

I haven't heard the Zodiac to make a comparison. The storage idea is a good point. For that you could use a cheaper FiiO X5.

About LCD-X and HD800, they are both very very good and I love them both. Here is my comparison.

Do people know when the new casing (with wider cables inserts) will reach the channel ?

What is the most appropriate (nicer) distributor in Europe where I can buy the HUGO ?
