Chord Hugo - Page 103

Not sure why low volume on your IEM - maybe check with other Hugo owners who use IEM. Hugo should be ok with RS1 my guess - after all one could even run RS1 with ipod etc. I only have high ohms headphones at the moment and Hugo seems to be able to handle those.

Sleepy one I meant my ear phones go really loud but I don't need to use the full range of the volume dial on the Hugo as the amp section is really powerful

Repost from 901 thread:

The Coax out supplied with the 901 works perfectly with the Hugo. No need to buy cables.

I cancelled my cable order as I realized this cable was included in my 901 box...must be because it is from Japan. Not sure there is a difference with using ZX1 with USB...have not had enough time. But the different will be slight if any.

Today I got a lovely surprise. 24/192 optical out working with a new toslink optical cable I bought! Check out the blue light signaling 192 going through. I'm a happy camper!

The optical cable is an unbranded made in Japan cable I got for usd15 off my local audio shop.

But I'm not that great with this kind of work so I would prefer that someone did that job for me..
What would be "the best decent" USB cable? With the Hugo in the chain I would put a little extra money in it.. as I guess that the Hugo deserves it. wink.gif

These are my diy cables for the Hugo so far -

Outside to inside - Wireworld Platinum Eclipse 7 digital Oyaide BNC SLSB > RCA SLSC (had to cut the outer casing down to fit the Hugo), Nordost Heimdall 2 USB (Mac > Hugo), Heimdall 2 USB 5.5 in. (CCK > Hugo), Wireworld Starlight (CCK > Hugo)

This is my goto setup for portable for the time being. So far, these micro USB connectors are quite reliable, have plugged and unplugged at least 100 X and not had a handshake problem. But it's a bxxxch to solder, the contacts are very small and narrow so the solder joints and the contacts can break easily. Takes time and lots of patience.

I have compared the Heimdall 2 to AQ Diamond USB and Wireworld Silver Starlight, AQ won on dynamics, Heimdall won on micro dynamics and timbre, Wireworld  kinda in between. Personally, I prefer the Heimdall 2 pairing with the Hugo.

Do you find any difference when using different length of usb cable on Hugo?

Yes, minute differences, over sound signature is remains consistent. I'll do more comparison in a few days after the  cables settled.

The micro USB connector broke off on my Hugo. Be careful when using Hugo as a mobile device. I have been putting mine into a bag with the USB cable attached. The physical stress on the connector caused the internal micro USB plug break off...

I get 192/24 from the AK120 with this inexpensive cable from FiiO

Hey guys,

Thanks for letting me jump in. Got the Hugo in to try, and am definitely impressed. I've been using it in my main rig for about a week which is: MBP>Audirvana Plus>Wireworld USB>ifi iUSB>Nordost Heimdall 2 USB>Audiophileo2>Hugo DAC via Coax>Nordost Frey RCA ICs>Cavalli Audio Liquid Gold>DHC Complement2 OCC Litz XLR Balanced>Abyss.

This set up for home is perfect for my tastes. I've played around with cables and DACs, and this just works. Bass is deep, extended, textured - really grips, but the mid-bass pops with impact. Mids come through and render vocals in such a natural, human way, I just sit there with shock on my face. The highs are sparkly, very detailed, and at the same time, sweet with subtle detail characteristics. Never ever too bright. Hands down beats any headphone I've heard. And beats the best characteristics of said phone. For example, I prefer the bass of the Abyss over the TH900, the soundstage size and accuracy over the HD800, and the emotional engagement factor of the 009, to name a few.

Transportable goes: iPod5>Moon Silver Dragon USB to micro>Hugo: Can run Abyss with authority straight from Hugo, also take the Tralucent 1plus2 to work with me, and Hugo drives them swimmingly with no hiss. It seems the amp output stage of the Hugo adjusts to the headphone you have plugged in, so you're not stuck with limited travel on the volume knob with IEMs.

My favorite iOS music player is the Onkyo HF player. Tried quite a few. I dig the sampling/upsampling options it has, and the fact that it will truly output very high bit rate material. Only pain is you can't Wi-Fi zap music to it like others. But it's worth it. Stay away from TuneShell. It "plays" the high bit-rate file, but doesn't output/support anything higher that 44K. Very misleading and disappointing.

Getting some Cardas Clear Light ICs this week to see how they work out at in a transportable situation, or at home.

Sometimes at home, relaxing in bed, I'll run Hugo from the Mac, and maybe throw in the AP2. Currently trying to find an amp that is better than the Hugo on-board amp, and is also relatively transportable. Having trouble finding that. Cavalli's portable will definitely fit the bill once it is available. But I can't keep the prototypes : )

Wanting to know what woodcan's "sonic trifecta" encompassed. Didn't read the entire thread yet.
