The middle movements of a number of concerti, such as Bach's harpsichord concerto in D major (below) and Beethoven's 4th piano concerto.

I enjoy the piece by Bach, are there any similar pieces you'd like to share? Or perhaps CD's?

You would probably the enjoy the slow movements of many works.

You might also like Mahler's 2d symphony. Some very good recording include Stokowski, Kubelik, Klemperer, and Tennstedt.

Philip Glass score for The Illusionist: neo-Romantic minimalism.

Schubert's late Piano Sonatas will do very well in setting a desolate, sombre mood.  I'm partial to Claudio Arrau: people says he overdone the romanticism, but for such music I don't think this is a fault.

Definitely Mahler 2. Try the Shostakovich violin concerto in a minor, oistrakh recording is the best. Very dark, gorgeous slow mvt. If you're interested in Opera, check out Tosca.

Somber Opera - Pelleas et Melisande(1902) by Debussy. His music is like a sort of pleasure-pain.
