For my non-headphone setup I have a fully digital amp - the NAD D7050 - and I love the way it sounds with my favorite music. Unfortunately it won't drive high impedance headphones well. My experience is that the Sennheiser HD650's sound flat and lifeless with it, while the Denon AH-D600's sound full and warm. To me that suggests that it drives sensitive headphones well, but the high-ohms are out of luck.
So: I need a headphone amp that will drive more difficult loads, but most recommendations for HD650/T1 are tube amps like Lyr, Asgard and WA7.
Here's what I'm looking for:
I would describe the sound of the NAD D7050 as extremely crisp and revealing without being harsh, no added warmth. I gather that the NuForce DDA 100 sounds much the same. I was thinking about the WA7, which is described as an extremely linear amp (for a tube amp), but still it's a tube amp...
Are there any any desktop amps out there that
1) Use the same principle, that is fully digital PCM -> PWM conversion or have the same sound signature (see above)
2) Can drive 600 ohm headphones well
3) Are in the sub-$1,000 range
